Creating Xara Webster Clipart with CorelXARA

CorelXARA is a fully featured graphics package developed by Xara Ltd. and marketed worldwide by Corel Corporation. You may want to use CorelXARA to create graphics that you can distribute to other people for use in Webster. For example, you may want to create your own sets of clipart.

If you do, there's a few points to watch:

  • Webster's native file format is .WEB (although it can read .XAR files). It's more convenient for Webster users if you export your finished graphics in .WEB format. The CorelXARA documentation has full details of the .WEB export options. To create the smallest .WEB files check in the Export dialog box:
    • Remove Preview Bitmap
    • Remove extra Editing Information. Note that this exports named colors as local colors and is not suitable if you have used shades to create variations in color (see below).
  • If you want to create drawings that can easily be re-colored by Webster users, where only one or two colors will appear in the Webster colour gallery, then itÆs necessary to use Named Colors and shades of that color. Give the named color a useful name; for example, out button clipart uses the name "Button Color". Using shades in this way provides a simple way for Webster users to re-color drawings, including all the shade variations. (The CorelXARA documentation has full details on using shades.) Webster users can select the base color, edit it and all the shades reflect the edit.
  • Webster's color system is simpler than CorelXARA's. Colors defined as RGB are displayed as RGB; other colors are displayed as HSV. Webster cannot create named or spot colors. Also it cannot create tints, shades and linked colors.
  • For simplicity the Webster Color Gallery shows only those colors which are:
    • Parent colors and
    • have shades, tints or linked colors used in the drawing. If necessary, you can create an object with a shade applied and then hide it behind other objects - this ensures the parent color appears in the Color Gallery.
  • To avoid the user accidentally moving a part of your graphic, you can group the graphic before saving it.
  • Webster has no concept of layers. Everything appears to the user as one layer. Invisible layers remain invisible. Locked layers are unlocked.
  • Webster can transform objects by skewing, rotating or moving. It cannot apply perspective, moulds or reshape the outline of objects.
  • Webster can change the width and color of lines. It cannot change the dash pattern, join style or apply/remove arrow heads.
  • Webster can display (but not edit) all fill and transparency types available in CorelXARA. This means you can use, for example, Bleach transparency: Webster users wonÆt know which transparency type it is but they will see it displayed correctly.
  • You can assign Web Addresses to objects. Webster users can view these addresses and edit them if required.
