Testing the modem

If the modem appears to be dialing, and the phone line appears to be fine, you can test the modem connection using a terminal program.

This section assumes you have 'Hyperterminal' () installed.
You can find this by click on the 'Start' () button (usually in the bottom left hand corner of your screen), then in to 'Programs' and 'Accessories'.

'Hyperterminal' () is a terminal communications program. It is include with Windows95 and NT, and can be installed through 'Windows Setup' in the Add/Remove control panel (). See your Windows Instruction Manuals on how to install this.

Start Hyperterminal, and type in 'test' for a name of the connection, then click on 'OK'.

Type in area code as 0845, and phone number as 0798200, and make sure your modem is selected.

Click on dial, the modem should dial us up and you should be presented with a screen similar to the one below.

If this works then your modem, and phone line appear to be functioning properly. However if this does not appear, then the there is a modem problem preventing successful communication. Please consult your suppliers regarding possible solution.

Terminal connection are the most basic of modem connection available, any correctly installed and configured modem should be able to establish a text based terminal connection. If this fails, i.e. you get garbage on the screen instead of text, this indicates a misconfigured modem, please contact your modem suppliers for configuration help.
