Importing Text from External Files

You can insert ASCII text files created in other word processors into your AutoCAD LT drawing. You can either import the text or drag a file icon from Windows Explorer.

Importing TXT (ASCII) or RTF files from other sources can save you time. For example, you can create a text file of standard notes that you include in drawings. Instead of entering this information each time you use it, you can import the text. The imported text becomes an AutoCAD LT mtext object, which you can edit as if you created it in AutoCAD LT. Text imported from a TXT file inherits the current text style. Text imported from an RTF file inherits the current text style name, but it retains its original font and format.

You can use the drag-and-drop method to insert a text file into a drawing. Its width is determined by line breaks and carriage returns in the original document. Imported text files are limited to 16 KB. You can drag only files with a file extension of .txt or .rtf into an AutoCAD LT drawing.

If you use the Clipboard to paste text from another application, it becomes an OLE object, not a text object. If you use the Clipboard to paste text from another AutoCAD LT file, it is inserted as a block reference, and it retains its original text style.
