FONTALT System Variable

Type: String
Saved in:Registry
Initial value:"simplex.shx"

Specifies the alternate font to be used when the specified font file cannot be located. If an alternate font is not specified, AutoCAD LT displays the Alternate Font dialog box. The dialog box is displayed in the following cases:

  1. An AutoCAD LT Release 3 drawing is opened; FONTALT is not set or not found; and a TrueType, SHX, or PostScript font is not found for a defined text style.
  2. An AutoCAD LT Release 4 drawing is opened, FONTALT is not set or not found, and a SHX or PostScript font is not found for a defined text style. For missing TrueType fonts in Release 14 drawings, AutoCAD LT automatically substitutes the closest TrueType font available.
  3. The Browse button is pressed in the Preferences dialog box when you specify an alternate font.

AutoCAD LT validates the alternate font specified for FONTALT. If the font name or font file name is not found, the message "Font not found" is displayed. Enter either a TrueType font name (for example, Times New Roman Bold) or a True Type file name (for example, timebd.ttf). When a TrueType file name is entered for FONTALT, AutoCAD LT returns the font name in place of the file name if the font is registered with the operating system.
