Using Raster Images

Drawings created with AutoCAD Release 14 may include raster images. As with Xrefs, these objects are not actually a part of the drawing file, but the image is linked to the drawing file through a path name. Image paths can be changed or removed at any time.

AutoCAD LT has limited capabilities to manipulate image objects including

If the image was saved in AutoCAD with the image frame turned on, you can select image objects and perform operations including

For more information on changing display order, see Changing the Display Order of Overlapping Objects.

Using the List View

In the List View, the columns are aligned vertically and can be sorted by column by clicking the column heading in the list box. You change the width of a column by dragging its border to the right or left. Image names are not necessarily the same as image file names. You can change the image name without affecting the name of the file. If an image is not found by AutoCAD LT, its status is listed as Not Found. If the image is not loaded, its status is Unloaded.

Using the Tree View

The top level of the Tree View is listed in alphabetical order. In most cases an image file is linked directly to an existing drawing and exists at the top level only. However, if an xref or a block contains a linked image, AutoCAD LT displays additional levels.

Changing the Path

When you open a drawing with an attached image, the path of the selected image is displayed at the bottom of the Image dialog box under Image Found At. The path displayed is the actual path where AutoCAD LT found the image. If you open a drawing that contains an image that is not in the saved path location or in any of the defined search paths, the Image dialog box displays "Not found" in the image list, and the Image Found At box is blank.

You can remove the path from the file name or specify a relative path by directly editing the path in the Image Found At box, and then choosing Save Path. It may be different from the current "Found at" path.

Loading and Unloading Images

You can unload images from a drawing. For drawings with large images, unloading images can conserve memory and improve performance. Unloaded images are not displayed but can easily be reloaded when you need them.

An image can be loaded but still not displayed if the image was modified in AutoCAD Release 14 by clearing Show Image in the Modify Image dialog box. In this case, the image can be restored only with AutoCAD Release 14.

Working with Image Frames and Boundaries

An image frame is a rectangular outline of an entire image object. When IMAGEFRAME is on, you can use grips to change the image. With image frames, the Stretch mode grip scales but does not change proportions.

If the image was clipped in AutoCAD Release 14, a rectangular or polygonal clipping boundary was created. When IMAGEFRAME is on, you can use the Stretch mode grip to adjust polygonal clipping boundaries.

When IMAGEFRAME is off, both image frames and image boundaries are hidden. Hiding an image boundary ensures that the image cannot accidentally be moved or modified and prevents the boundary from being plotted or displayed. When image boundaries are hidden, clipped images are still displayed to their specified boundary limits; only the boundary is affected. Showing and hiding image boundaries affects all images attached to your drawing.
