Step 4: Troubleshooting

Configuration of your system

Now, we'll try to see how to resolve common problems.

  • System lockup or reboot
  • Video scrambling

Scrambled video is always a chipset problem. System lockups are generally caused by the chipset too, while reboots are, most of the time, caused by the processor optimization. Furthermore, a log file is provided.

So, first thing, when the system restarts, open the log file which is in your Powertweak directory, named as "sysenh.log".

Look at the last line, which is usually the one that caused a problem. You should also be able to understand what it means. A line of this file looks like this : Date - Time - Action recorded.

02/13/1999-18:40 - Leaving 440BX configuration sequence

With such a line, you can be sure the 440BX configuration causes problem. 440BX refers to the chipset, so it may be useful now to open powertweak and look at the current configuration for your chipset. Switch to expert mode and check the boxes for which the current state is "enabled", uncheck the others, like you see on the screen shot.page.GIF (2228 octets)

This should be enough to fix the problem in most cases. The same method can be applied to most of the components.

At this point, you can try to figure out which option causes the problem you encountered, if you wish to. Otherwise, leave the system configuration as is. In the case you find an option responsible for your problem, please email it to development@powertweak.com, this will be very useful !
