Mapping the Web with Micrografx WebCharter™

Welcome to Micrografx WebCharter™, the OLE automation script that lets you visually map Web sites using Micrografx FlowCharter™. The Micrografx WebCharter™ wizard uses Micrografx FlowCharter™ to construct and view Web sites, and provides direct access to any of the mapped pages on the Web site. In addition, you can import and export Sitemap files using Micrografx WebCharter™. Sitemap files provide an auxiliary navigation resource for working in the Web. The Sitemap file format provides hierarchical information about the individual pages at a given site.

To map the Web with Micrografx WebCharter™

  1. Enter a starting Web page location (URL) or click Import to read a Sitemap file. You can also enter local HTML files and FTP sites as the starting URL.
  2. Enter a specified depth, if necessary. A depth of two means Micrografx WebCharter™ reads the page you specified and all the pages off that page.
  3. Check the Stay In the Original Domain box if you want to restrict Micrografx WebCharter™ to read only the pages in the starting domain.
  4. Check the Do Not Read More Than box and enter the maximum number of pages you want Micrografx WebCharter™ to read, if necessary.
  5. Click Next. The wizard will attempt to locate the URL, and if found, will display all that page's links.
  6. Double-click the ? icon in front of the selected link you want to map. The wizard will display any further links found. If there are no other links, Micrografx WebCharter™ will remove the ? icon. If Micrografx WebCharter™ cannot map a link (for security reasons or because of a broken jump), the wizard will replace the ? icon with an X.
  7. Click Next after expanding any links.
  8. Click the Generate FlowChart box to create a mapped Web site diagram in Micrografx FlowCharter™.
  9. Choose the way you want your flowchart to look from the various options.
  10. Check the Save As Sitemap File box, and name the Sitemap file, if necessary.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click Finish to create the chart and to open the mapped Web site diagram in Micrografx FlowCharter™.

What do I do with the mapped Web site chart?

Once the Micrografx WebCharter™ wizard has mapped the selected Web sites and charted them in Micrografx FlowCharter™ you can use Micrografx FlowCharter™ to print the diagram or to gain direct access to the individual pages.

When Micrografx FlowCharter™ opens at the end of the wizard, you are viewing the diagram using the Used Pages command. This command lets you view all the pages used by your chart on screen at the same time. It is useful for getting an overall view of your chart, selecting and moving many objects at a time, and quickly making large-scale changes. To see more detail, you can use the View menu and the Zoom tools.

Micrografx FlowCharter™ also displays the Note window which contains text attached to a certain shape. In this instance, the Note window displays the URL for each link. You can open and close the Note window using the Note command on the View menu or by pressing CTRL + F6.

Each site you have mapped is represented as a shape in the diagram, complete with the site name. To visit a mapped Web site, double-click the shape. Micrografx FlowCharter™ will attempt to locate the corresponding URL and open it in your browser.
