After school you headed down to the soda shop. For me it was "Thompson's" and it looked just like this picture. You'd sit there all starry eyed over the latest love of your life. Then you'd walk up to the jukebox and put in a quarter and press those magic buttons that were going to change your life if you could just get this guy/girl to fall in love with you. How could you NOT fall in love with The Five Satins singing In The Still of The Night or the Dubs pouring out their hearts with Could This Be Magic or the Penguins harmonizing on Earth Angel
And then you put on your Blue Suede Shoes for the Saturday Night Sock Hop and Danny and the Juniors singing At The Hop or The Cleftones doing "Little Girl of Mine".........."diddle little little little lit, yeah". Oh what memories those old songs bring back....first date There's A Moon Out Tonight.... ...first kiss Then He Kissed Me...first 'real' love To Know Him Is to Love Him...... first breakup Since I Don't Have You.... first song you heard in your new car One Summer Night ...... first dance with the person that now wears your wedding ring I Only have Eyes For You. And so many more memories of someone, somewhere or sometime.
This is vocal group music from the early 50's through the mid 60's. These pages will try to bring back some of the memories we all have of the great Rhythm & Blues, Doo Wop, and Rock music that we grew up with and still love to this day. The blasts from the past that probably changed us and still can bring a tear to the eye or a smile to the lips.
There will be a Trivia Contest where the winner gets credited on these pages for all the world to see, and also receives $$$ to use at my record store, where you can purchase these oldies but goodies on vinyl.
Contest No.8 Winner: mike sweeney pammik@courant.infi.net
NEW CONTEST NOW POSTED
And no one will want to miss Tidbits, all the little bits of nonsense and trivia that clutter our minds. There will be a highlighted artist with interviews, discographies, bios, pics and someday, sound bites. The current group is The Harptones. See past artists that have been Spotlighted.
I have removed the CD and Record Review pages for the time being. For the past 6 months I have tried to find a reliable person to do the reviews but have been unsuccessful.
I am not, in any way, shape or form, an expert on R&B,Rock or Doo Wop. I simply love this music and thought it deserved its own site so that others may come to appreciate the vocal group sound and the great contribution these artists made to what we now call, Rock & Roll. If you have a question or just would like to make a comment, write in to Vinnie Goomba.
(Most of you regulars will notice a new look here. Due to major time constraints I had to combine the "Little Richard" letters page with the "Vinnie" page and put a limit on the number of questions).
Finally, I'm working on the links page to other 50s and 60s sights. I hope to get it finished in my lifetime but you never can tell.
I also have removed the guestbook and the counter as they were more trouble than they were worth. They slowed down the loading of the pages and also went haywire on a fairly regular basis. Judging by the amount of mail I get, I know there are thousands of visitors to this site, so I don't really need a counter anyway. I would like a reliable guestbook though, so if anyone has any suggestions, please tell me.
Any suggestions, comments or contributions are welcome.
