While working for Unelko Corporation (a 25 year old corporation), Tony Pitman wrote Bridgit as a database library for the Windows version of Visual Basic. At that time Visual Basic was just at version 1.0 and very new. Since Bridgit was the first database library for Visual Basic and Windows developers, it quickly enjoyed a lead in the market. Microsoft to this day recommends Bridgit for database development. When Visual Basic for DOS appeared, Bridgit was quickly ported over to support it. Bridgit is lean (less than 170k) and fast (written in optimized C code).
Since the Windows version of Bridgit is a standard Windows Dynamic Link Library it can be used with any product that has an interface to DLL files. Bridgit has been used and tested with Visual Basic, Visual C++, MS Access, Delphi and even MS Excel. The DOS version is only compatible with Visual Basic for DOS.
