Step 1 - Open the New Image dialog |
Choose File > New, or click the New button on the standard toolbar, or press Ctrl + N. The New Image dialog opens. |

Step 2 - Set image dimensions |
Enter the desired width, height, and resolution for the image. |

Step 3 - Set background type |
Set the background layer type by choosing either Raster Background or Vector Background. |

Step 4 - Set color depth |
Choose a color depth from the drop-down list. Note that raster backgrounds allow for five choices, and vector backgrounds allow for two. |

Step 5 - Set background color |
Raster images can have a colored or transparent background. For a colored background, click inside the Color box and pick from the palette. For a transparent background, mark the Transparent checkbox. Vector images will have a transparent background. |

Step 6 - Click OK |
Click OK to open the new image. |

Notes and Tips: |
 |
Many users choose a Resolution of 72 ppi/dpi because it results in smaller file size. If your new file is intended for print output, you may want a Resolution setting better suited to the printer. |

When choosing a Color Depth, be aware that settings lower than 16 Million Colors (24-bit) may deactivate some Paint Shop Pro tools and features. |
