Japanese Americans (Honolulu, Hawaii)
Japan's ties with Hawaii go back a very long time. Japanese immigrants first went to Hawaii in the mid-19th century to work in sugarcane plantations. Today, Japanese Americans account for one-quarter of the population of the State of Hawaii. Hawaii is also a very popular vacation resort spot for Japanese people, and some 1.5 million Japanese visit Hawaii every year.
