Nitobe Inazo's "Bushido"

"Bushido," Nitobe Inazo's book about Japan, was published in Philadelphia in 1900. It was published when interest in Japan increased after Japan had defeated the major power Russia in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. People wanted to know about the Japanese concept of loyalty and bravery. The book was easy to understand because it cited Western concepts as examples to explain Japan. It was very popular and translated into seven languages. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt liked the book very much, and he is said to have bought 60 copies and gave them to his children and friends.
