JET Program

The JET Program, established in 1987, stands for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. It is a program conducted by local authorities and other organizations in Japan. This program provides opportunities for young college and university graduates from overseas. They teach foreign languages at Japanese schools or do work in international exchange at local governments in Japan. The objective of the JET Program is to promote mutual understanding between Japan and other countries as well as the internationalization of Japanese regions. As of July 1, 2002, there were 6,273 JET participants working in Japan. About 40 percent of them are Americans.
