Ice skating

Ice skating in Japan began in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido which is the northernmost prefecture in Japan. It was introduced to the Japanese people by an American teacher during the Meiji period (1868 - 1912). In the Olympic games, Japanese athletes are especially active in speed skating and figure skating events.
