Forests account for about 70 percent of Japan's total land area. Many Japanese homes are made of wood, and the pulp industry is very active. Nevertheless, the annual timber harvest is on the decline. Reasons include issues related to the cost and variety of Japanese timber. Japan has started to depend on imported timber.
