The signing of the U.S. - Japan Security Treaty (1951)

The U.S. - Japan Security Treaty was signed at the same time as the San Francisco Peace Treaty. Under this treaty, U.S. armed forces were to remain stationed in Japan even after Japan regained its independence. The purpose was the "peace and security of the Far East," and the U.S. was to contribute to the defense of Japan.
