Shrines and Temples of Nikko

Nikko became a center of mountain worship in the late 8th century when a temple was built there, and it is a region with a history of 1,200 years. Together with its beautiful natural surroundings, the history of Nikko as a sacred mountain with Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and a mausoleum for the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate is still continuing to this day. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1999.
