Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto

Kyoto was the ancient capital of Japan for about 1,000 years until the mid-19th century. It was a center of Japanese culture, and new cultures were born there over the centuries. There are many historic buildings and gardens that symbolize each of the ancient capital's periods. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994.
