Kagi Shareware Infrastructure

19 July 1996. Here's the cast of characters and their appointed tasks:

PowerMac6100/60

Apple Internet Mail Server
MacDNS
Timbuktu Pro

Apple Internet Mail Server is a POP3/SMTP mail server created by Glenn Anderson in New Zealand and purchased by Apple Computer.

MacDNS is a domain name server for the MacOS.

This server is running on mirrored disk drives using OT 1.1 and System 7.5.3.

PowerMac6100/60

Global Village Fax Server
PhonePro 3.0.1
Timbuktu Pro

This is the machine you reach when you send a fax to +1 510 652-6589. The Global Village software stores each incoming file on the hard drive. For now I print the incoming shareware payment forms and process them with a bar code scanner. In the future I'll process these faxes electronically with software that can read bar code.

I recently upgraded to PhonePro 3.0.1 from Cypress Research on this Mac to handle voice calls. For now it just answers the phone and relays information. I plan to implement a voice mail system in the future. So far it's working quite well.

This server is running on mirrored disk drives. Running 7.5.2 and MacTCP

PowerMac6100/60

WebStar
Count WWWebula
NTP Server
Timbuktu Pro
Apple Internet Mail Server

This is the Kagi Shareware web server from which you are receiving these pages. WebStar is a full featured web server for the MacOS and it runs great.

Count WWWebula is the software that counts how many times a web page has been accessed and then creates the nifty odometer showing that count.

NTP Server is a Network Time Protocol server for the Mac OS written by John Dundas and it works great. All my other Macs sync their clocks to this one and this one syncronizes it's clock to the US NIST atomic clocks via a local time server.

This mail server is secondary to the primary mail server. If something happens to the primary, all Kagi.com mail goes to this machine. In addition, this machine handles most of the outgoing email that is generated by all the payment processing. This reduces the burden on the primary mail server.

This server is running on mirrored disk drives. Running 7.5.2 and MacTCP.

PowerMac6100/60

WebStar-SSL
Butler SQL 1.5.6
Tango
ListSTAR
Timbuktu Pro

The WebStar SSL Web server is up and running. It provides secure communications between the web browser and the server. My initial plan is to allow the shareware authors to access their personal data via this web server. After that I'll start working on installing the Commerce Toolkit.

Butler SQL is up and running as is Tango. A friend is currently in the process of designing and implementing my author info database.

Right now ListSTAR, the listserv from StarNine is only serving the FAQ@kagi.com mail bouncer. If you send any message to FAQ@kagi.com in reply you get the complete set of FAQs. It's for people who don't have web access.

This server is running on mirrored disk drives. Running 7.5.2 and MacTCP.

MacClassic II

MacWebCam with Connectix QuickCam
NetPresenz
The Connectix QuickCam brings Black & White video into the Mac. It cost US$ 99 and it works just fine on this very old and slow Macintosh. MacWebCam is software that converts the QuickCam image into a JPEG on a periodic basis.

NetPresenz is a rock solid server for the MacOS written by Peter Lewis. It used to be called FTPd but with the addition of Gopher and WWW the old name of FTPd no longer fit. This version also includes basic Web Server functionality. The JPEG image of the construction is served by that server.

This server is just for serving the QuickCam pictures and there is no reason for it to be running on mirrored hard drives.

Connection

I am connected to my upstream provider (zocalo.net) via a 128 Kbps frame relay link using an Engage SyncRouter. The link provides IP and AppleTalk connectivity.
