Guide to setting up Bind95 and SOCKServ
What you need
-
SOCKServ
-
BIND95/NT
The old link no longer works. Bind NT and Bind95 are the same.
-
Internet connection in Windows95 or NT - DUH!
-
A network - Ethernet is recommended. Other kinds should work though
Step By Step Setup
-
Make sure that your LAN card is setup right. Check in the System
object in Control Panel. If you can share files this is true.
-
Make sure TCP/IP is installed and setup on all computers.
-
Check the Network object in Control Panel. Check that
there is a TCP/IP protocol bound to the network adapter.
-
Look at the properties for the TCP/IP protocol bound to the network card.
If there is no IP address specified use 10.0.0.x with x between 1 and 255.
Each machine needs a unique IP. This range is reserved for private networks.
-
On the DNS Configuration tab on any machine other than the one
that will run BIND, enable DNS and add the address of the machine that
will be running BIND as a DNS Search Server.
-
Install BIND95 on the machine that will dial into the internet. The installation
program will ask you what kind of setup you want. Choose CACHEING ONLY.
You will need to have Bind running before you can share the connection.
You can have it start automaticly or manually.
-
Install SOCKServ. This is simple, just copy it to a directory on your hard
drive.
-
On machines other than the one dialing in, you will need to setup Netscape
or Internet Explorer to use SOCKServ. I don't use IE, so I can't help you
there. On Netscape, go to the Network Options in version 2.x and
3.x. On version 4.x go to Edit...Preferences...Advanced. In the
SOCKS box type in the address of the machine running SOCKServ.
That's IT!
Sharing the Connection
-
After dialing in start SOCKServ and BIND95. The default SOCKS port is 1080.
-
This can be combined and automated with a batch file.
