SEARCH TIPS
This page offers instructions on how to use the search engine.
Please click here for the tutorial.
Category searches
You can restrict your searches to a specific category of document by choosing a defined category from the drop-down box.
Wildcard searches
You can use wildcard characters * and ? in your search terms to search for multiple words and return a larger set of results. An asterisk character in a search term represents any number of characters, while a question mark character represents any single character.
This allows you to perform advanced searches such as therm*; which would return all pages containing words beginning with therm - such as thermit, thermite, thermometer, etc.
Similarly, ethan?l would return all pages containing seven letter words beginning with ethan and ending with l - ie, ethanal and ethanol.
Also, *chlor* would search for any words containing the word chlor - for example, chlorine, chloroform, dichloromethane, etc.
Exclusion / negative searches
You can precede a search term with a minus character to exclude that word from being included in your search results. For example, a search for sodium -chloride would return pages containing the word sodium but not containing the word chloride.
Skip words
Note that some common words such as the, and, or, etc, may be deemed to be skip words and ignored by the search.
