SETUP
To reinstall WinSafe95 use the Setup program and select install. You will need to
delete the Winsafe directory first. If you are updating (already have WinSafe95 installed)
and now wish to install a new version you will get a Update button when you click on the
Setup program.
If Winsafe95 has a problem reading or finding files after Reinstalling see the Winsafe Setup text file located under the Menu Item Setup.
BACKUP ONLY AFTER WINDOWS BOOTS COMPLETELY AND BEFORE ACCESSING ANY PROGRAMS.
This will insure that you do not backup with corrupted files.
To install WinSafe95 read the Setup Text file located at the menu bar SETUP and then SETUP TEXT.
To uninstall Winsafe95 use the Uninstall WinSafe at the Setup Menu or use the Setup Program.
All text files are written with note pad and can be read from DOS. To view from DOS
Type EDIT HELP.TXT at the Winsafe directory.
HOW TO INSTALL:
1) Run the setup program. If a MSDOS window stays open please close it and continue. Watch
the task bar.
2) Follow the on screen instructions.
3) WinSafe95 will start the WinSafe95 interface with more instructions you should now read
Testing
WinSafe95 can not read files that are in use. If you receive an error notice during
startup (bootup); after installing new programs, or after setting up WinSafe95, you may
need to adjust the wait time. WinSafe will do this for you. This may take up to 15 reboots
to Windows to get the WAIT TIME adjusted properly.
You may want to reset the WAIT TIME when you first install WinSafe95 to 27 if you have IE
4.0 or higher on your system.
If the you get a message box after every boot telling you the Registry has changed and you
should backup, click on Check Registry and if WinSafe95 tells you an error has occured:
this means that some files are still in use. WinSafe will make adjustments the next time
you boot to Windows.
The preset value is set to 11 when you install WinSafe95. A value of less then 7 may cause
WinSafe95 not to be able to read the Registry. You will get a message box at EVERY bootup
that the Registry has changed. Click on Check Registry Size. If you get a message box that
an error has occured then the Wait Time
is to low.
Increasing the number will cause a longer Wait Time and decreasing it will shorten wait
time.
WinSafe95 must wait till the Registry is loaded and all programs (example: virus scanners)
have started booting into Windows.
If you get a message window that WinSafe95 can not find a file see TESTING in the help
file.
Testing is for when you have installed a program that WinSafe95 can not read (Hidden files
that it finds). The message is FILE NOT FOUND and a LINE # or File in use or has
Read Only Attributes. You will receive an error message at bootup. WinSafe95 may also
report with the REPORT command that a File has been added/deleted when you know that one
has not.
To fix the problem use The START TEST command and then click on the REPORT button and then
TEST COMPLETE. Rerun REPORT.
If WinSafe95 still reports the file as deleted access Winsafe.ini and under[FILES]add the
file name i.e. "Awedft.bmp" without the path.
1) On the menu bar click on SETUP then START TEST.
2) WinSafe95 will now look for non-system hidden files. If it finds one, a message box
will appear and tell you that WinSafe95 can not find a file, line 68. Winsafe95 may also
prompt you to backup
now. Do not backup till the entire test is complete. If the only message you get is
WinSafe asking if you had any problems click YES if you did. If No then go to step 9.
3) Write the file name and path down on a piece of paper (example: c:\Windows\system.sys)
and click OK.
4) When the Please Wait disappears click on SETUP and then ATTRIBUTE
5) Type the file name and path in the next box to be displayed, and click OK.
6) You will now see in the MSDOS window a line similar to the one below:
"A ....SHR .....SYSTEM.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT"
make note of the letters between the A and SYSTEM.DAT. In the example the letters are SHR.
Then close the MSDOS window. If no letters are present that is OK too.
7) In the next window to appear type the letters that appeared in the previous MSDOS
window (without spaces), and click OK. If in step 7 only an R was present type the letter
R if no
letter appeared enter a Zero.
8) After you have completed step 7 with all files reported as not found click on the Setup
Menu Item and then on START TEST again. You should not receive any messages that WinSafe95
can not find a file. If you still get a message click on Setup Menu Item and then
WINSAFE.INI Look for [HIDDEN] and verify that you have entered the correct file name and
path. Then repeat steps 4-7.
9) Next click on the TEST COMPLETE and then click BACKUP
The free disk space may change each time you start WinSafe95. This is due to the size of your swap file in use. If over the course of the day your free disk space drops more then 30 megs and you have not saved new files or added a lot of information to your system you probably have a memory leak
WinSafe95 reads the free disk space once, at the time you activate the WinSafe interface.

When you get the message Backup Complete after backing up with no error messages then
everything is working fine.
DO NOT BACKUP IF: your system is not working properly. If you have installed a new program, wait at least for one or two boot ups to ensure that the new program is working correctly.
1) After WinSafe95 has been successfully installed and setup, WinSafe95 will tell you when
you need to backup your files. This will happen whenever a system file changes. You can
check this by clicking the Check Registry size, if the Registry changed. Also see Wait Time
2) Backup your files directly after startup when prompted; before installing anything or accessing any programs. If you just installed a new program skip backing up for one or two boot ups to insure that you system is stable.
3) WinSafe95 will only backup all your files once after each Windows startup. If you
wish to backup a second time, you must restart your computer first. This is to insure that
you do not save
corrupted files.
1) If you receive an error message after WinSafe95 has been setup read the Setup Text
file. If the error message is File not Found line 68 see Testing If the testing process does not
fix the error see #3.
2) If you receive error message during startup (rebooting) read the WAIT TIME section. If the Wait time does
not fix the error read #3.
3) Some files that have not attributes are in use by Windows at all times. If you
locate the file in the Explorer and right click it and select Properties youmay find that
the only attribute check is Archive. If this is the case and you have already did the test
and attribute test with WinSafe and entered a zero then: on the WinSafe95 interface,
access the WinSafe.ini and check the spelling. If the spelling is correct then click on
the File Menu Item and select Log View. In the Log look for the file in the list. Make
note of what letters are capitals and what letters are small letters.
EXAMPLE: C:\WINDOWS\InetServer_Event.log
Now look in WinSafe.ini and change the capital letters to small letters as shown in
the Log.
EXAMPLE:
INETSERVER_EVENT.LOG change to InetServer_Event.log
Restore only if you have a problem or you installed some program that you want to remove
and did not back up since installation of that program. Or you may use the INSTALL OLD
CONFIGURATION command.
To restore files in SAFE MODE or a lockout read the Restore Text.
To help fix the problem you should read the Restore text as it will help you diagnose what the fault is.
If you find yourself in Windows and the message box telling you to restore DO NOT CLICK ON THE BUTTON. If you click this button now without copying the System.da0 and the User.da0 from the WinSafe directory to the Windows directory you may be installing a corrupted Registry again. You should rename your Windows System.da0 and User.da0 then manually restore with WinSafe. WinSafe will replace both the Registry and the Backup files. After you have restored with WinSafe reboot. After reentering windows the registry box may still be there. Now you can click on the Restore from backup.
Once Windows displays this message box it remembers and thinks that you did not restore. It will display this message until you click on the button and reboot.
If you restore the Registry and Windows wants to come in Safe Mode try and choose
Normal. If you come in under Safe Mode and if there is a message box that tells you to
restore from Window backup click on it. Windows will be copying the files you just
restored with to the Registry that you also just restored.
When you restore the Registry with a file with a large byte size difference, Windows sees
this as a corrupted Registry. After rebooting Windows will prompt you to restore with its
backup files. WinSafe has replaced both sets of files.
If you have restored using the Restore From Safe or Restore With Current features then WinSafe95 has made a backup of the current Windows backup registry files called SYSTEM.000 and USER.000. There are saved in the Windows directory. You may have to reboot twice if the byte size difference has been extremely large. If Windows ask you to click on Restore From backup twice do it.
Windows may display a message box after rebooting a few times if after two or three time you will need to install an earlier version of the Registry.
HOW WINSAFE95 WORKS
WinSafe95 uses an installation program that sets up its' own directory; backs up all your
vital files and then hides them with attributes so that you may not be able to see them.
WinSafe95 also placed additional backup files in the "Safe" when you installed it. The Safe is a hidden subdirectory of
Winsafe. In the Safe is a copy of the Registry, Windows.ini file and your System.ini.
These files will never be replaced by WinSafe95 unless you request SAVE OLD CONFIGURATION.
They are placed here for you to use if you should ever backup with corrupted files.
WinSafe95 also takes a picture of your system and saves the current information in a log.
The information is stored until you restart your computer again and replaced with a new
log. This log will not be replaced if you boot into Windows in Safe Mode. If you use the
RELOG command WinSafe95 will start a new log.
To view changes made to your system since you last booted to Windows click on the REPORT
button and when WinSafe95 finishes reviewing the log and your current system it will
display the information. You can then see if any changes were made to your system files
since you
last booted into Windows successfully. This may take a minute or two.
What Is the Safe
The Safe is a hidden directory that you may view only if you have selected the option in the Explorer under View/Options. This directory contains four files that were placed there when you last installed or reinstalled WinSafe95. These are the files that are installed if you select Install Old Configuration. These files can also be updated by selecting Save Old Configuration. Also see INSTALL OLD CONFIGURATIONS:
