Description
QCI 2000 is a utility to backup and restore your ICQ contact list(s). If you reinstall ICQ, just restore a backed up copy of the stuff, so you don't need to add every contact again, and you won't lose any. From the list, everything is backed up, including message history, sound settings, ignore list, invisible list, etc. This version is compatible with both ICQ98a, and the new ICQ99a.

Future versions might also backup/restore the registry settings, so you can replicate a complete ICQ installation on a different PC, or just restore it after some crash or something.

System Requirements
Presently QCI 2000 is available only for Windows NT4/NT5/95/98/2000 platforms. I'm not sure about the Windows 3.x port. In terms of hardware requirements, basically, if the system can run ICQ, then it will run QCI 2000 without any problems.

Download
QCI 2000 can be downloaded from http://members.tripod.com/~aalaap/qci/qci.zip. The run time DLLs can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/MSVBVM50.EXE. For updates, please visit http://qci2000.cjb.net.

Installation
No installation required! First of all, if you get a message like "MSVBVM50.DLL Not Found" or something like that, then you need the Visual Basic 5 runtime DLLS. They can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/MSVBVM50.EXE. If you're running Windows 98/NT5/2000, then you don't have to worry about anything at all.

Uninstallation
QCI will not put any files in your Windows, Windows\System, or Windows\System32 directories. It also doesn't make any changes to the system registry. To uninstall, just delete the QCI2000.EXE file, this README.HTM file, and you're done. QCI 2000 also makes a file called QCI2000.INI in the same directory where QCI2000.EXE is placed. This file may also be safely deleted.

Usage
QCI 2000 is too easy to use, so i'll just skip this section completely! Complete instructions are given at each stage.

Questions?
If you don't know what to do if you have a question, then this means that you haven't read the disclaimer at the top of this document. Anyway, email me at aalaap@iname.com with whatever query you have. My ICQ UIN is 3294067.

Version History
12th May, 1998 - Version 0.1 BETA
- First release.

30th May, 1998 - Version 0.2 BETA - Second release. New: Sounds and bookmarks are also backed up. New: Complete or selective backup.

19th June, 1998 - Version 0.3 BETA - Third Release. New: Multiple UIN support. Can work with one UIN separately. Removed: Selective Backups temporarily disabled. This option wasn't used much anyway.

22nd June, 1998 - Version 0.4 BETA - Fourth Release. Bug Fix: Selecting ALL resulted in errors. Fixed. Changed the tabbed layout to something simpler, because the tabs needed an OCX. So that's a lot of cosmetic improvements.

23rd June, 1998 - Version 0.45 BETA - That buttons and frame layout... kind of sucked. So here's a different attempt at it. Looking good.

14th July, 1998 - Version 0.5 BETA - Nothing different to those who have the Tahoma font installed in their system. I took this thing to a friends place and it looked like total crap in the Times New Roman font! I added a check that changes the font to MS Sans Serif if Tahoma is not available. It should look pretty nice now! Also, I changed the font of this documentation.

17th November, 1998 - Version 0.6 BETA - Got bored with the exisiting code, so I rewrote the whole thing again, from scratch. This version is a *lot* more stable than the previous one, and has support for the new ICQ99a too. But needless to say, it works equally well with the present Version 98a. Its got a better more wizard-ish interface. In the race for names, I also renamed QCI to QCI 2000 !

18th November, 1998 - Version 0.7 BETA - Ok fine, I got a little carried away with just releasing the new version, but it was really a late one, and had a couple of bugs, and a few features missing too. This version won't (*shouldn't*) give you any more path/file access errors. If you still get them, do mail me. The browse button also works now. Put hotkeys, and some other cosmetic changes. Thats about it for this release. You know, this version was released just a couple of hours after the 0.6 one, because I discovered the bugs quite early, but by the time i fixed them, it was already some 2am or something because I started working around late the previous day. Hmm. Interesting.

21st November, 1998 - Version 1.0 FINAL - At last, a proper working version! Includes the neat looking progress bar, which was missing in the earlier versions, and a new overwrite without prompting option. This one still doesn't determine your ICQ directory automatically, but I think I'm close to that. Also, automatic shutdown of ICQ while backup/restore, and auto restarting (ICQ) after operation, is planed. At present it just warns you.

5th December, 1998 - Version 1.1 - BUGFIXED! If you're using 98a, then QCI 2000 backed up, but didn't restore, and if you're using 99a (not upgraded from 98a) then it didn't back up, but restored !!! Fixed that wierd bug in this "service" release, with an easter egg in the software just for fun. I know easter eggs in software are not mentioned in the user manual, but what the hell! Just type "pic" in the ICQ directory field in the backup process, and watch the fun! :-)
