Error -44 or -46 When Installing
Not to fear! This error occurs simply because the CD is locked and some browsers attempt to decompress the install archives to the same disc where they reside.
If you encounter this error, simply:
- Click the OK button to dismiss the error dialog.
- In the subsequent window, choose a destination for the install files.
To permanently eliminate this error for our disc and other locked discs, you must set StuffIt Expander's preferences to extract archives to a particular folder on your hard drive.
To change Expander's destination folder:
- Double-click the Expander icon to open Expander.
- Choose Preferences from your File menu (if using OS 9) or your Expander menu (if using OS X).
- In the Destination tab, select Use, then choose a folder where you want to expand archives.
- Click OK to save your preferences, then quit Expander.
Alternately, you can open the files directly from the CD's Software and Shareware folders.

Safari Compatibility
We tested this CD for compatibility with Apple's new Safari browser (b51). Performance is good, and all functions appear to work, except for some issues with QuickTime playback, dicussed below.
If you encounter additional problems, please contact the editor at macworldcd@clerestory.com.

Installing Demos from Finder
If you have any problems installing demos from within your browser, you can simply install demos from the Finder.
In the Software and Shareware folders, you can find the software organized by section on in the interface.
If you are having troubling using the aliases, you can find the files directly. Programs are in a folder called Software within the Data folder. (For OS X users, the complete path is '~/Macworld 19.07/Data/Software/', where '~' means your set of Volumes.)
When you have found the demo you want to install, double-click it to expand it or drop it on a copy of StuffIt Expander.

Classic Starts when Expanding Archives
On some Mac OS X installations, there is no association between Stuffit Expander — the default tool for expanding most file archives under Mac OS X — and the various types of Stuffit archives.
The easiest way to correct this problem is to download and install a new copy of StuffIt Expander. You can download a copy from http://www.aladdinsys.com.

Cannot See Intro or Bungalow Movies
If you cannot see the movies for our Intro or Breen's Bungalow, you can do one of two things:
- Download a newer version of QuickTime from Apple's site — http://www.apple.com/quicktime/.
- View the movies in the QuickTime Player, but opening them from the Finder.
Note: The Safari b51 version's QuickTime component has a bug that may start the sound without updating the video. The problem seems to be intermittent and will probably have been fixed by the time you read this. If you encounter problems, try looking at other movies on the disc, such as the Bungalow movie. Once video appears for one movie, Safari seems to display other movies without difficult. If the problems continue, use the QuickTime Player to view the movies.

Movies Play Poorly
If the Intro or Breen's Bungalow movie play poorly, you have several options:
- Click the View Small button underneath the video pane. (On some monitors you may need to scroll down to see the button.) The video will restart at half the size.
- If you're using Mac OS 9 or Classic, try running the browser without other applications running.
- Download a newer version of QuickTime from Apple's site — http://www.apple.com/quicktime/.
- View the movies in the QuickTime Player, but opening them from the Finder.

Having Trouble Viewing PDFs
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a standard way for companies to provide product information in an attractive and cross-platform medium. Chances are very good that you already have Adobe's Acrobat Reader, which displays PDF documents, on your computer. If you are using Mac OS X, PDF is a native format and can be read with Preview.
Still, if your browser is not configured to view PDF files, you may have difficulty with the View PDF buttons found on product pages.
You can get a free copy of Acrobat Reader from Adobe's website — http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/

I Can't Read the Small Type
With folks using their Macs at many different screen resolutions, it's hard to get the right sized type for everyone. If you are having trouble reading reviews or long articles, try these tips to make your experience better.
Many browsers let you easily increase and decrease the base font size in your browser.
To change the base font size in your browser:
- Press Command-= (the key with the '+' on top) to increase the size of your text.
- Press Command-Minus to decrease it.
If these keys don't work for you, consult your browser's help to learn whether this feature is available.

Using Other Browsers
This disc has been designed and tested in Internet Explorer 5.1. You may use another browser, such as Netscape, to view the interface, but some functions, such as rollovers my fail to work.
Alternative browsers, such as iCab 2.7, OmniWeb, and Opera 5, have a varied list of problems as these browsers do not support the same standards and implement standards they do support in different ways.
Apple's new Safari browser in beta version displays our product very well. Some issues with QuickTime playback exist (see above), but performance for most functions is very good. We will continue to work to provide Safari support for our readers.
We recommend you use Internet Explorer 5.1 or later, and we will return to designing our interface for all systems when the development tools on which our standard interface was based are made available for Mac OS X.
Thank you for your patience.
