How to Play

The Rules of Tennis (only if you are unfamiliar with the game).

A player, standing behind his baseline, uses a racket to serve the ball over the net. For the serve to be good, it has to land in the "service court" of the receiver. This is the rectangular area closest to the net and in front of the opposing player. It takes up about a quarter of one side. A point is scored when:

one of the players fails to return the ball

if the ball bounces twice on the same side of the court

the ball lands outside the boundaries of the court ("OUT!")

when the server fails to serve the ball properly
(e.g. hitting the ball twice into the net or not serving it to the service court, again
"OUT!" in Top Tennis).

The court boundaries are demarcated by white lines. The outer set are for doubles matches, the inner set for singles matches

A game is won, by the first player to win 4 points by a 2 point margin. The first point is called 15, the second 30, the third 40 and the fourth "game". A zero score is called "love". Hence a score during a game maybe "15 love" (15-0) if the server is winning, or "love 15" if the receiver of the serve is winning. If both sides reach 40 (a condition known as "deuce"), one of the players must win two consecutive points to win the game. After deuce, the next point is "advantage", as in "advantage Smith" (Smith being the name of the player who has just won the point). The next point after advantage, if Smith wins the next point as well, is game. If he loses the next point, the score reverts to deuce.

The first side to win 6 games by a 2 game margin, wins a "Set". A match can consist of 3 or 5 sets. The first side to win 2 of 3, or 3 of 5 sets wins the match. Typically, women's or doubles matches consist of 3 sets.

How to Play Top Tennis

General keys during play:

ESC to quit a match
F3 Replay
F5 Pause the game. Press F5 again to continue
F10 Boss screen. Press F10 again to continue

Serving:

Press the Spacebar ("fire" button on a joystick) to throw the ball up in the air.
As the ball falls, you hit it by pressing an Up or Down arrow key.

Up causes your player to hit the ball hard, Down to hit it softly. When your player is serving from the other side of the court (furthest away from the camera viewpoint) these keys are reversed (Up is soft, Down is hard). The key to a good serve in Top Tennis is knowing just when to hit the ball as it falls. Remember you need to hit it inside the service court (see rules above). Practice makes perfect (you can always practice under Training from the main menu).

You can adjust your shot to the right or left by pressing and holding the Right or Left arrow keys, just before hitting the ball.

Summary:

Press the Spacebar (or "fire" button on a joystick) to throw the ball in the air
Wait for the ball to start falling
Press and hold the Left or Right arrow key (optional)
Press the Up or Down arrow key to hit the ball

Returning the ball:

To hit the ball back over the net, press the Spacebar (or the "fire" button on a joystick).
The longer you hold the Spacebar before releasing it, the more powerful your return shot will be.

Drive/backhand selection is automatic based on the position of the player in relation to the ball.

You can adjust your shot to the right or left by pressing and holding the Right or Left arrow keys before releasing the Spacebar to hit the ball

Other shots:

Lob Press and hold the Up arrow key before releasing the Spacebar to hit the ball.
Dropshot Press and hold the Down arrow key before releasing the Spacebar to hit the ball.

When your player is at the other side of the court (furthest away from the camera viewpoint) these keys are reversed.

Summary:

Press and hold the Spacebar (or "fire" button on a joystick)
Press and hold the Left/Right/Up/Down arrow keys to direct your shot
Release the Spacebar and arrow key to hit the ball
