INPRISE CORPORATION ANNOUNCES PLANS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR JINI™ TECHNOLOGY IN FUTURE VERSIONS OF JBUILDER

SAN FRANCISCO -- January 25, 1999 -- Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq:INPR) today announced that it will provide support for Jini™, Sun's connected computing technology, in future versions of its award-winning JBuilder family of Java development tools. This support will allow Java programmers to create Jini™ technology based applications. The announcement was made today in San Francisco at the Jini™ technology launch event at Sun's annual meeting for financial analysts.

"Over the past few years, Inprise, as a Sun partner, has worked with us on a number of projects. We consider JBuilder to be one of the leading tools for enterprise Java development," said Mike Clary, General Manager, Jini Technology, Sun Microsystems. "JBuilder's stellar support for many Java programming technologies, including JavaBeans, RMI, and Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs), has made a broad impact in the adoption of those technologies by the programming community. We think that JBuilder's support for Jini technology will be instrumental again, in helping accelerate delivery of new kinds of connected applications for the Internet and Wide Area Networks."

"Inprise is excited about the capabilities that JBuilder can provide in developing Jini™ technology applications," said Rick LeFaivre, senior vice president of research and development at Inprise Corporation. "Our customers have chosen JBuilder to write enterprise applications that use 100% pure Java, EJBs, and CORBA."

According to LeFaivre, "The challenge facing the industry now is to be highly productive at using Jini™ technology for 'dialtone' applications integrating PersonalJava™ and EmbeddedJava™ devices into the Internet-connected universe, including Enterprise backplanes. Over time we are planning on adding functionality to JBuilder to make it the single programming tool necessary to program the entire spectrum of Java. The new Jini technology capabilities in JBuilder will be the first manifestation of that."

    About Jini™ technology
Jini is a connective technology that dramatically expands the power of Java technology. Jini technology enables spontaneous networking of a wide variety of hardware and software - anything that can be connected. Jini allows people to use networked devices and services as simply as using a phone -- plug-and-participate via a network dialtone. The goal of Jini is to dramatically simplify interaction with networks. With Jini, a disk is not a peripheral to a computer, but a type of storage service to the network. Jini consists of a small amount of Java code in class library form and some conventions to create a "federation" of Java virtual machines on the network, similar to the creation of a community today. Network citizens such as people, devices, data, and applications within this federation are dynamically connected to share information and perform tasks.
