JBuilder Press Release

BORLAND SHIPS JBUILDER PURE JAVA DEVELOPMENT TOOLS
Corporate Customers, Partners, Press Laud New Java BeansExpress, JDK 1.1 Support and High-Performance Java Database Connectivity
Company Launches "Club JBuilder" -- A New Interactive Forum for Java Developers.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- September 15, 1997 -- Borland International, Inc. (NASDAQ:BORL) today announced the shipment and immediate availability of JBuilder Professional and JBuilder Standard, the first products in the company's new line of visual development tools for Sun Microsystems' JavaÖ programming language. The JBuilder product family features the industry's fastest and easiest JavaBean component creation, a scalable database architecture, robust visual development tools, and the ability to produce "100% Pure Java" platform-independent applications, applets and JavaBeans. JBuilder Client/Server Suite, a higher-end version for building enterprise-scale business applications with Java, is scheduled for availability later this year.

Borland today also launched "Club JBuilder" -- a new interactive website for the Java development community to share information on Java programming issues and to learn more about JBuilder. Club JBuilder includes its own Java newsgroups, whitepapers, factsheets, competitive comparisons, and ordering information. To subscribe to a free electronic newsletter about Java and JBuilder, developers can visit /feedback/listserv.html.

"JBuilder is the market's first industrial-strength Java development environment -- one that delivers the robust visual tools, JavaBeans components and high-performance database connectivity that corporations need to deliver platform-independent, business-critical applications in Java," said Del Yocam, Borland's president and CEO. "From our research, developers require a tool that supports 100% Pure Java and all the industry's major Java and database standards. The shipment of JBuilder is the most significant Borland product launch since the introduction of Delphi Client/Server Suite, and a key component in our corporate information network (Information Network) strategy."

"We've been extremely impressed with JBuilder's robust development capabilities," said Jeffry Borror, director of information technology at Daiwa Securities, one of the largest securities brokerage firms in the world. "We found JBuilder to be so far superior to other Java tools on the market that we committed to building our production Trade Processing System in JBuilder while the product was still in Beta. We will be delivering this major Java application to our customers imminently, and we couldn't have done it without JBuilder."

Borland JBuilder is a family of highly-productive, visual development tools for creating high-performance, platform-independent applications using the Java programming language. JBuilder's scalable, component-based environment is designed for all levels of information network or "Information Network" development projects ranging from applets and applications that require networked database connectivity to client/server and enterprise-wide, distributed multi-tier systems.

As part of Borland's Golden Gate strategy to support major industry standards in all of its tools, JBuilder's open environment will support 100% Pure Java, JDKÖ 1.1, JavaBeans, JFC, AFC, RMI, CORBA, JDBC, and all major corporate database servers. JBuilder will also provide developers with a flexible open architecture to incorporate third-party tools, add-ins, and JavaBean components. Industry Reaction to JBuilder
The Java and software development communities have embraced JBuilder's arrival. Below are comments from some of Borland's industry partners, customers, and magazine product reviewers have said about JBuilder:

"Borland's experience with object-oriented development environments has contributed to the development of the JavaBeans component model. With Borland's help, we have been able to greatly extend the flexibility and robustness of the Java language. We recognize the importance of high-quality, component-based RAD tools like JBuilder to the continued success of Java."
-- Jon Kannegaard, vice president of software products at JavaSoft, a business unit of Sun Microsystems Inc.

"Oracle licensed Borland's JBuilder because of its superior Java technology. Borland's 'pure Java' approach is an excellent approach for customers who are looking to maximize the benefits of network computing -- no client administration, complete portability, and standards compliance."
-- Sohaib Abbasi, senior vice president, Oracle Tools

"Built from the Beans up to do what Java does best, JBuilder vaults Borland into the lead pack in the second-generation Java programming tools market. PC Week Labs found JBuilder...to be the right tool for corporate developers who are tired of Java-generated trivia and hype. The pre-release version of JBuilder that we tested distinguished itself as a fresh and functional approach to using all of the information that Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java technology offers to developers."
-- Peter Coffee, PC Week Labs, August 25 1997

"JBuilder makes Java a piece of cake -- Java comes of age with a full-featured development environment from Borland. (Five out of five stars, 'Outstanding' for both technology and implementation.)"
    -- BYTE Magazine, October 1997

"We needed a professional development tool to build our corporate Java applications. Our requirements were simple: 100% Java code, complete JDBC and JavaBeans support, and a professional IDE. Unlike other Java tools, JBuilder's true Two-Way-Tools generate pure Java code, with no hidden tags or macros. We have evaluated most of the tools available on the market, and only JBuilder met our strict criteria. Unlike Visual J++ and Symantec Cafe, which lock you into one middle-tier architecture which we didn't care for, the code generated by Borland's JBuilder is 100% Pure Java."
-- Patrick Ryan, design engineer at Hobart Corporation

"Java is fast becoming the language of choice for Internet/Intranet development. With its platform-independence, zero-cost deployment and wide industry support, Java will be a major enabler of open solutions and architectures. That's why we have chosen to support Borland's JBuilder, both as our preferred tool for implementing clients' I-net applications and as an additional training offering to our clients. Grant Thornton has always been in the forefront of such changes, aligning ourselves with industry leaders like Borland who have an understanding of the tools required to effectively harness new technologies."
-- Fred Kroin, Partner-in-Charge of Grant Thornton LLP's Advanced Technology Practice

"JBuilder's component-based environment and support for all major industry standards gives developers a new level of flexibility that will greatly facilitate rapid application development. JBuilder makes it easy for developers to integrate the JClass grid and charting components into their JBuilder applications."
-- Lee Garrison, KL Group Java marketing product manager

"Since Borland's JBuilder gives us the ability to leverage our Delphi experience and to move to the latest version of Sun's JDK, we chose Borland's JBuilder over Microsoft's Visual J++. Because JBuilder uses the JDBC-compliant DataExpress architecture, we can easily utilize a variety of data sources -- not just row/column databases -- thus improving performance and enhancing our scalability."
-- John Melka, vice president and senior systems engineer of Nations Bank Services, Inc., Global Finance Technology Support for Nations Bank

"The visual development environment in JBuilder is very intuitive and easy-to-use -- I have been able to develop and deploy JBuilder applications to the UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh platforms. JBuilder delivers on Java's promise of develop once and deploy anywhere."
-- Sean Michael, Internet developer at HealthPoint G.P. Inc.

"We have selected Borland JBuilder to develop our commercial JavaBean components: Objective Blend and Objective Grid for Java. JBuilder offers the fastest way to create and deploy JavaBean components with Java BeansExpress. JBuilder's component architecture and its full support for the JavaBean standard make it the preferred development tool for professional JavaBeans development."
-- Bill Loeb, chief Java architect, Stingray Software

"As a Borland Premier Partner, ACT maintains a staff of technicians and certified trainers who are experts on Borland's development tools and the n-tier, distributed computing architecture. We are especially excited about JBuilder, with its powerful set of components and Delphi-style rapid application development. We are preparing to offer JBuilder training to our customers, as well as JBuilder/Java project development expertise. We see JBuilder to be a most exciting development tool for both Wintel and Unix work."
-- Daniel Walsh, CEO, Advanced Computing Techniques

"MKS applauds Borland for JBuilder's scalability and extensibility. MKS currently integrates our award-winning software configuration management solution with Delphi and Borland C++. We look forward to working with Borland to offer tight integration of MKS Source Integrity's advanced SCM capabilities to Borland customers creating cutting-edge Java business applications with JBuilder."
-- Tobi Moriarty, MKS vice president, marketing

"We have used Borland's JBuilder extensively to re-engineer our four JavaBeans products for the JDK 1.1 environment. Not only was it one of the first tools to fully support the JavaBeans specification, but it also provides the most complete and robust implementations of the platform that we have seen. ProtoView's DataTableJ, TreeViewJ, WinJ and CalendarJ were all very easily integrated into the tool and able to perform flawlessly from the start."
-- Don Preuninger, ProtoView Development Corporation

"JBuilder is the only second-generation Java RAD tool that allows us to develop large-scale distributed applications in Java. Finally with Java we can move from the Client/server age into the distributed era where the corporate information can become available across the network and enterprise boundaries."
-- Fred Rahmanian, Certified JBuilder Trainer, Ensemble Corporation

"The Emerging Technologies Division within the Compuware Columbus branch has partnered with Borland, with a particular focus on distributed computing and Internet-related technologies. Our customers are now looking at Java-related technologies as another weapon in the fight to gain a competitive advantage, to deliver higher quality systems in shorter timeframes with less maintenance and lower administration costs. Our customers have been pleased with the familiar look-and-feel of JBuilder, and the potential for significant productivity gains within the developer community is real."
-- Steve Karnes, Manager of Emerging Technologies, Compuware Corporation Columbus Branch

"JBuilder Client/Server Suite presents an exciting new industrial-strength Java development environment that extends the robust nature of the Java language. The inclusion of our industry-standard software configuration management solution into JBuilder creates an optimized Java development environment with the quality controls necessary to deliver Java business applications faster and more reliably."
-- John Cimral, INTERSOLV vice president and general manager of Automated Software Quality solutions

    JBuilder 3rd-Party Support
JBuilder is built upon an open Java API so that any third-party tool or JavaBean can integrate seamlessly into the IDE. In addition, major computer book publishers -- including Sams, Que, IDG, Sybex, Coriolis , Osborne, MIS Press and others -- will support Borland's JBuilder users of all experience levels with comprehensive tutorial, solution-oriented and reference books. Borland Press/Sams will publish two JBuilder titles: Teach Yourself JBuilder in 21 Days and JBuilder Unleashed. These and other JBuilder titles will be available at computer stores, and independent and chain bookstores.

Other Borland JBuilder partners include Oracle Corp. and IBM. As announced earlier this year, Oracle is licensing Borland's Java development technologies for use with Oracle's own database systems and application development tools. Under the terms of this agreement, Oracle will integrate and distribute JBuilder technology with a number of Oracle's existing and future products. In July, IBM and Borland announced a joint development effort to explore ways through JBuilder and IBM's San Francisco Project to improve the enterprise-wide Java development process through an integration of visual tools, Wizards and object-oriented components.
