JBuilder Press Release

BORLAND TEAMS WITH REFERENTIA SYSTEMS
TO MAKE LEARNING JAVA PROGRAMMING EASY
Multimedia Learning System Integrates With JBuilder 2 To Provide Training From Inside Product

SAN FRANCISCO -- March 24, 1998 -- Borland International, Inc. (NASDAQ: BORL) today announced it has teamed with Referentia Systems Incorporated to create "Referentia for JBuilder: Volume 1," the first integrated, extensible multimedia learning system for any software development tool. "Referentia for JBuilder" is an easy-to-use, integrated learning system for JBuilder 2, Borland's award-winning family of visual development tools for building corporate and enterprise software applications with the Java programming language, which was announced this week. Today's announcement was made as part of Sun Microsystem's JavaOne developer conference being held here this week, booth #527.

"Referentia for JBuilder," which is a separate product from JBuilder, was designed for software engineers, MIS directors, programmers, applications developers and website designers interested in acquiring cutting-edge visual development techniques for Java using Borland JBuilder. The system's unique extensibility lets users add future volumes of content to their library of built-in JBuilder tutorials. On installation, the Referentia system provides a wealth of tips, tricks and training using narrated lesson animations to teach JBuilder techniques. The system launches from JBuilder's Help menu and includes a powerful "Try It" feature that allows users to work directly in JBuilder while following along with textual and/or narrated step-by-step instructions.

"The best way to get developers up and running quickly with JBuilder 2 is by putting training right into the product. Referentia offers one of the most advanced, integrated approaches available," said Zack Urlocker, Borland's vice president of marketing. "We selected Referentia because its products have a proven track record for quality and innovation, and because its system is both extensible and integrated."

"Because JBuilder 2 has so much to offer Java programmers, we developed a learning system that will help users get the most out of the product by providing detailed, real-life productivity training," said Bill Kern, president of Referentia Systems. "The Referentia system is designed to get people up to speed fast, while encouraging exploration and advanced learning. Future volumes of the 'Referentia for JBuilder' series will plug right into the system and expand it with advanced productivity training."

Borland JBuilder 2 is the newest in a family of highly-productive, visual development tools for creating high-performance, platform-independent applications using the Java programming language. JBuilder's scalable, component-based environment is designed for all levels of "Information Network" development projects ranging from applets and applications that require networked database connectivity to client/server and distributed, enterprise-class systems.

The JBuilder product family features fast and easy JavaBeans component creation, a scalable database architecture, robust visual "Two-Way" development tools, and the ability to produce "100% Pure Java" platform-independent applications, applets, servlets, and JavaBeans. The product's open environment supports JDK 1.1, JDK 1.2, JavaBeans, JFC/Swing components, CORBA, Enterprise JavaBeans, RMI, JDBC, and all major corporate database servers.

"Referentia for JBuilder: Volume I" tutorials include topics such as "What's New in JBuilder 2," "Building Beans with BeansExpress," "Faster Programming with Code Insight," and more. Each volume is authored by recognized industry experts. Referentia's non-linear training approach means users have control over how much or how little they want to learn in a session. From fast answers on the job, to in-depth Java programming techniques, Referentia's integrated multimedia learning system offers expert instruction at the desktop, 24 hours a day. The product includes Web http://links in the system that make it easy to hit Borland's JBuilder homepage. The Referentia framework functions as a web browser to take users straight to web destinations without leaving the JBuilder environment.

"Referentia for JBuilder: Volume I" is the first in a series of Referentia for JBuilder products. Pricing will be announced at a later date. The follow-on product, "Referentia for JBuilder Volume II" will be released through Referentia Systems Incorporated.
