JBuilder Press Release

BORLAND SHIPS JBUILDER CLIENT/SERVER SUITE
New High-End Java Tool Features Seamless Integration with Visigenic's VisiBroker CORBA ORB for Developing Distributed Multiplatform Applications

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - November 18, 1997 -- Borland International, Inc. (NASDAQ:BORL) today announced the shipment and immediate availability of JBuilder Client/Server Suite, a high-end addition to the company's line of visual Java development tools. JBuilder Client/Server Suite supports the corporate development of large-scale, multiplatform Java applications by integrating Visigenic Software's VisiBroker ORB for seamless CORBA integration, Borland DataGateway Enterprise for high-performance database connectivity, InterSolv PVCS software for advanced team management and version control, and Borland's proven SQL tools for robust client/server development.

The announcement was made this morning at an analyst and press event as part of the COMDEX conference and tradeshow.

"JBuilder Client/Server Suite provides a complete high-end solution for developing industrial-strength corporate information networks with Java," said Rick LeFaivre, Borland's CTO and vice president of research and development. "The tight integration of JBuilder with Visigenic's CORBA ORB is one of the first steps towards our vision of combined component-based development tools and scalable distributed object middleware."

"JBuilder is the best product for our upcoming and ongoing three-tier development projects," said John Melka, vice president and senior systems engineer of Nations Bank Services, Inc., Global Finance Technology support for Nations Bank. "We chose JBuilder Client/Server as our primary Java development tool because of its enterprise-level support for CORBA components, advanced database support and software configuration management capabilities."

"Enterprise-class development tools such as Borland's JBuilder Client/Server Suite are integral for corporations seeking to build distributed business solutions using Java," said David Spenhoff, director of product marketing at Sun Microsystems' JavaSoft division. "We are extremely pleased to see Borland delivering a robust visual environment that fully promotes the entire Java platform -- including JDK 1.1, JavaBeans, JFCs, JDBC and the 100% Pure Java Industry Initiative."

Borland JBuilder is a family of highly-productive, visual development tools for creating high-performance, platform-independent applications using the Java programming language. JBuilder's scalable, component-based environment is designed for all levels of "Information Network" development projects ranging from applets and applications that require networked database connectivity to client/server and enterprise-wide, distributed multi-tier systems.

The JBuilder product family features the industry's fastest and easiest JavaBeans component creation, a scalable database architecture, robust visual development tools, and the ability to produce "100% Pure Java" platform-independent applications, applets and JavaBeans. The product's open environment supports 100% Pure Java, JDK 1.1, JavaBeans, JFC, CORBA, RMI, JDBC, and all major corporate database servers.

JBuilder Client/Server Suite provides a comprehensive and integrated set of visual development tools for creating large-scale, multiplatform business applications using Java.

Visigenic VisiBroker for seamless CORBA development
JBuilder Client/Server Suite includes full support for CORBA, Java IDL and IIOP through Visigenic Software's VisiBroker for Java. VisiBroker is the leading CORBA Object Request Broker (ORB) for building, managing, and deploying distributed Java applications that are open, flexible, and interoperable across multiple platforms. Through five new CORBA Wizards in JBuilder, VisiBroker enables true interoperable distributed applications for the Internet, Intranets, and enterprise computing environments. (VisiBroker deployment licenses are available separately from Visigenic.)

"JBuilder and VisiBroker for Java are a great combination of technologies for IT organizations that are building business-critical distributed applications," said Bob Macdonald, vice president of marketing at Visigenic Software. "Borland has done a great job of integrating the power of VisiBroker into the enterprise application development environment that JBuilder Client/Server Suite provides." Borland DataGateway Enterprise for high-performance JDBC database connectivity
Borland DataGateway is a database connectivity middleware solution providing "100% Pure Java" client access to corporate databases through industry-standard JDBC interfaces. The product is designed to provide high-performance JDBC database access using native drivers on a middle-tier to corporate information residing on Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, DB2, and InterBase servers, desktop databases and ODBC data sources.

InterSolv PVCS for advanced team management and version control
The integration of PVCS Version Manager enables JBuilder developers to manage and maintain multiple versions of their software -- as well as track all changes to the system under development. Together, PVCS Version Manager and JBuilder streamline the Java development process, improving team communication and speeding application delivery.

"As a long-time partner with Borland, we are pleased to have our industry-leading PVCS Version Manager integrated into one of the most productive development tools for Java available today," said John Cimral, InterSolv vice president and general manager of Automated Software Quality. "The delivery of JBuilder Client/Server Suite introduces an innovative Java development environment into the market. Now, with the integration of our leading software configuration management capabilities, developers have access to a robust Java development tool with the quality controls necessary to rapidly produce quality applications."

Local InterBase server and Borland SQL Tools for building, testing and managing scalable database server applications
JBuilder Client/Server Suite includes Borland's proven SQL Builder, SQL Explorer, and SQL Monitor tools to help developers deploy robust client/server applications. JBuilder also includes the Local InterBase Server, to assist the building and testing of SQL database applications and applets.

BeansExpress for fast and easy JavaBeans creation
To increase developer productivity by encouraging component reuse, JBuilder features BeansExpress, a fast and easy way to build JDK 1.1-compliant JavaBeans components. With BeansExpress, developers can visually create components from scratch, or combine a number of existing components into a new JavaBean. JBuilder also includes over 100 reusable JavaBeans -- with source code -- for GUI design, Internet development and database access.

JBuilder also includes the highly-scalable DataExpress database architecture and a fully-functional CORBA E-Commerce reference application, with source code.
