New Borland JBuilder 2 Provides Powerful Deployment Server for Java

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA & HONOLULU -- July 9, 1998 -- Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq: INPR) and Referentia Systems today announced the availability of a next-generation, computer-based multimedia training tool for professional software developers interested in learning advanced Java application development techniques. Referentia for JBuilder is an easy-to-use, modular and integrated learning system for Borland JBuilder 2, Inprise's award-winning family of visual development tools for building corporate and enterprise software applications with the Java programming language.

Inprise today also launched a new JBuilder web site devoted to helping developers build, manage and deploy sophisticated pure Java applications using JBuilder 2's powerful Java deployment server capabilities.

"For Java to continue its success in Corporate America, high-quality developer training and robust application deployment are two issues that need to be addressed by the Java development community," said Zack Urlocker, Inprise's vice president of marketing. "Our JBuilder customers have asked Inprise to provide solid solutions in these areas - to help them become more productive and successful in building and delivering their own Java applications."

    About Borland JBuilder 2
Available now from Inprise and major software distribution channels, Borland JBuilder 2 is a family of highly-productive, visual development tools for creating high-performance, platform-independent applications using Java. JBuilder's scalable, component-based environment is designed for all levels of Java development projects ranging from applets and applications that require networked database connectivity to client/server and distributed, enterprise-class systems.

The JBuilder 2 product family features fast and easy JavaBeans component creation, a scalable database architecture, robust visual "Two-Way" development tools, and the ability to produce "100% Pure Java" platform-independent applications, applets, servlets, and JavaBeans. The product's open environment supports JDK 1.1.x, JDK 1.2, JFC/Swing components, JavaBeans, Enterprise JavaBeans, CORBA, RMI, JDBC and all major corporate database servers.

The Inprise Deployment Server for Java
The Inprise Deployment Server, which ships with JBuilder 2 Client/Server Suite, allows Java developers and IS managers to centrally deploy, manage, and update their Java applications across corporate information networks. Corporations can benefit by being able to significantly reduce application deployment and maintenance costs while remote clients gain immediate and reliable access to the most current version of any application.

JBuilder 2 Client/Server Suite includes a development license for the Inprise Deployment Server. There is a per server (unlimited clients) deployment fee. For pricing information, please contact Inprise direct sales at 831-431-1064. Customers outside the U.S. should contact their local Inprise office, distributor or representative.

"At Pfizer Central Research, we selected JBuilder 2 for its superior visual environment, its unmatched Pure Java code creation, and its unique Deployment Server for Java," said Jeff Carlson, senior research applications developer for Pfizer Inc. "The Deployment Server for Java revolutionizes our Java application deployment on multiple platforms by centrally managing, distributing, and updating applications from one server."

Training Software for Java Developers for only $9.95
Inprise has teamed with Referentia Systems Incorporated to provide the first volume of the training system, Referentia for JBuilder, to all JBuilder 2 users and other interested parties for only $9.95 to cover shipping and handling fees in the U.S. (Fees may vary by country outside the U.S.). Volume I: Getting Productive in JBuilder 2 offers users a starter set of more than 15 lessons, overviews and concept animations about working efficiently and productively in Borland JBuilder 2. Topics covered include the JBuilder 2 Editor, AppBrowser, BeansExpress, Debugger and more.

Volume II: Building Database Applications is scheduled to be available in August 1998 at a list price of (US) $199. Volume II contains more than 45 lessons and concept animations covering key database techniques for JBuilder professionals. In this series of interactive tutorials, users will gain a strong understanding of the JBuilder Data Model and master a solid foundation of essential and advanced database techniques. Users will also learn how to complete their database application development with advanced user interfaces and various deployment strategies. Referentia for JBuilder Volume III: CORBA Essentials is the next title planned in the Referentia for JBuilder series. Pricing for Volume III will be announced at a later date.

The Volume I starter CD and information on additional volumes are available from Referentia Systems at 1-800-569-6255 or 1-808-396-1232 or online at http://www.referentia.com/jbuilder.

Referentia for JBuilder, which is a separate product from JBuilder, was designed for software engineers, MIS directors, programmers, applications developers and website designers interested in acquiring cutting-edge visual development techniques for Java using Borland JBuilder. The system's extensibility lets users add multiple volumes of content to their library of JBuilder tutorials. On installation, the Referentia system provides a wealth of tips, tricks and training using narrated lesson animations to teach advanced JBuilder techniques. The system launches from the desktop or through JBuilder's Help menu and includes a powerful "Try It" feature that allows users to work directly in JBuilder while following along with textual and/or narrated step-by-step instructions.

"At the Ohio DOT, we're including Referentia for JBuilder in our training program because our developers prefer the audio/visual approach of the multimedia CD," said Angelo Serra, a programmer/systems supervisor for the Ohio State Department of Transportation. "We're very impressed by the effectiveness of the 'Try-It' feature where you can watch a lesson, then practice it live in JBuilder while you listen to the steps. Referentia for JBuilder will significantly increase our productivity - it's like having a professional trainer assisting each developer. We've already placed an order for Volume II."

"Referentia is excited about introducing this new training tool to the JBuilder user community," said Bill Kern, president of Referentia Systems. "It's all geared toward helping developers become more efficient and productive with JBuilder 2. And those who find value in Volume I, will find much greater scope and depth in the additional volumes."
