    *Tool — JBuilder Client/Server
    *Industry — Information Technology
*Application — AppCenter Distributed Application Run-Time Management

COMPANY BACKGROUND
Inprise Corporation is a leading provider of high-quality software products for software developers worldwide. Inprise is distinguished for the Borland and VisiBroker lines of award-winning rapid application development tools and scalable middleware for desktop, client/server, and enterprise systems.
SITUATION
Enterprise-scale IT organizations today are building applications that are fundamentally different architecturally from applications they might have built just a short time ago. These Information Network applications pull information from a number of diverse sources, then structure that information in new ways to solve enterprise business problems. The systems are built using distributed object technology. Not only is the information they utilize distributed over multiple sources, the machines running various parts of the applications are widely dispersed as well.

The new distributed application paradigm requires new methods of control and management. When a traditionally architected application has a problem, it is relatively straightforward to isolate the difficulty. With distributed computing systems, it is much more difficult to know where to begin-it isn't even clear which of several machines may be causing the problem. To resolve this situation, Inprise has developed a new AppCenter tool for the run-time management of distributed applications.

SOLUTION
Using AppCenter, developers can model the application, forming a picture-a topology-of how the application is distributed. AppCenter monitors the application as it runs, notifying the operator if a machine, a segment of the network, or the application itself goes down. AppCenter can be configured to automatically take necessary corrective actions, such as starting another copy of a failing component.

To build the full-featured user interface for this critical enterprise-enabling tool, developers selected Inprise's own Borland JBuilder Client/Server Suite. Inprise gained a significant competitive advantage by rapidly creating a 100% Pure Java application that runs on any multiple Java platforms, including Microsoft Windows NT, IBM AIX, HP HP-UX, and Sun Solaris. In doing so, Inprise demonstrated its total confidence in JBuilder as a fast, robust, stable, and scalable Java development environment, enabling Inprise to guarantee the highest possible performance and reliability of the AppCenter product.

AppCenter developers found JBuilder to be a superb development and programming environment. They gained maximum productivity through the fully integrated Application Browser, project manager, code editor, CodeInsight, BeansExpress, wizards, and lightning-fast compiler. The powerful graphical debugger made it easy to find and fix bugs. Utilizing JBCL, JavaBean, and JFC/Swing RAD components, the development team was able to save an estimated three months of development time and still simultaneously deliver the high-performance AppCenter management tool for four different Java platforms.
