If you clicked a link once but now want to cancel the selection, press
the Cancel button, and you can again scroll down half-a-page at
a time with the joystick.
For easier reading, you may want to click the "*" key to switch
to the full-screen mode.
Introduction
Firstly, this mini-browser is not as complete web browser as you have seen
on desktop computers. However, it allows you to comfortably browse many
web pages using your mobile phone. The pages designed with mobile
handsets in mind generally work best, but a lot of other pages can be accessed
as well. Pages using JavaScript and having no alternative access methods
may not work.
Supported features include:
-
Basic html rendering, including images (JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP), forms,
client-side and server-side image maps.
-
Cookies (not saved permanently).
-
Support for SSL to access secure web sites.
-
Easy one-hand navigation.
-
A dynamic up to 300 kB cache to speed up browsing and reduce network traffic.
-
A navigation stack of 30 last visited web pages.
-
Up to 1000 bookmarks (up to 5 in demo version).
-
The demo version is limited to three minutes of online browsing.
Check out what charge rates your mobile phone operator is using
for a GPRS data connection. Surfing with the Doris Browser tends
to generate more mobile network traffic than surfing with a WAP browser,
because HTML pages are larger than WAP pages and can contain a large number
of images.
Getting started...
First you need a GPRS service from your mobile phone operator. You
also need to set up an Internet access account. The accounts used for WAP
browsing cannot be used, since the data is filtered by the WAP gateway.
Please consult to your mobile operator on what configuration settings you
need to have. There are more complete instructions in the Doris Browser
User Manual (a PDF document).
After you have set up the account, there is only one thing you need
to do: define one starting web page for the Doris Browser. Open up the
Options
menu and use the command Bookmarks/New Bookmark to do that. If you
first selected one of the addresses below by clicking it, you can also
use the Bookmarks/Bookmark selected command to create a link.
Google
Yahoo
Anygraaf
You can also click the link again. Doris Browser will recognize that
you are trying to access an external web link, and a dialog will pop up
in which you can select the account to use. Please select the one you created
previously. After the page is loaded, use the Bookmarks/New Bookmark
command.
To visit the web page, select
Bookmarks in the Options menu to
view a clickable list of bookmarks, or hit the "1" keyboard key (if you
used the first slot) to open the page.
Make sure that you have enough free memory. One megabyte of free memory
is recommended, but you can surf with less. Exactly how much you need depends
on what kind of web pages you are accessing. When the Browser runs out
of memory, it usually happens when rendering images. The image won't load
and an error message is displayed, but you can continue browsing.

Tips
Did you know that ....
-
Whenever you enter a new web page by clicking a link, the Browser also
copies this web address to the clipboard.
-
With the Bookmark selected command you can also make a link to a
form "submit" button. Please note that this command saves all data you
entered to the form, including a password you might have used. Do not
use this command to save passwords, if the phone is stolen somebody may
have access to your user account. It is meant only to save the data used
for example in often-used search engine queries.
-
You can Shift-click (ABC key) a selected link to view where the link points
to.
-
You can click an e-mail address to copy it to the clipboard, for example
to be pasted later to your address book.
-
You can quickly access most frequent web pages using keyboard keys "1",
"2", ... "6". They take you to web pages that are the six first ones in
your bookmark list.
-
You can define a bookmark to point to an image. This can be handy when
viewing web versions of teletext pages.
-
When accessing form selection lists, click to choose next entry in list.
Shift-click to select previous list entry.
-
You can read and scroll the web page while the images are being loaded
in the background. Clicking a link stops loading of the images.
-
Zoom commands affect only the images, not text. The text size is
selected in the Preferences dialog.
-
If you have selected Dynamic column width in the Preferences,
Instead of zooming, you can scroll to the right with the joystick. The
text will "follow" you by enlarging the page area. When you scroll back
to the left, the text area is still wide. This can be handy in enforcing
various lists to be one line each for easier readability. To restore the
text area width, scroll one more time to the left when you are already
at the leftmost position.
-
The Reload (key C) command always fetches a fresh version from the
web server, bypassing the cache.
