Clusterball
v1.002
Flying in circles
Rating :
Clusterball is an online aerial sport in which you compete to collect
chains of balls. You fly a ship over an open landscape, in which you
can pick up balls from designated tracks, which form a visible chain
behind the ship. The chain allows other players to assess the value
of another player's ball chain, both in the game environment and on
the radar screen. As it increases in length and value, the chain increases
the ships drag factor, gradually slowing it down. The balls in the
chain represent only a potential score. They are then flown through
the ring shaped goal in the Clusterball arena, so they disappear and
get converted to points.

RUGBY 2001

Touchdown!
Rating :
Rugby 2001, from the stable of EA sports, boasts of 20 real international
teams with 600 players and actual player statistics. The game has
pretty good graphics and works on a new 3D engine that gives you
better and clearer graphics. The game also replicates players' attributes
giving you actual characteristics of players such as height, weight,
etc. The different camera angles that the game sports (around 12
angles) brings a kind of realism to the gameplay. With the excellent
graphics rendering, you can actually see the grime and dirt as the
players rough it out. The sound effects are equally excellent-the
grunts of the players and crowd exclamations have been taken from
real games and sound very much authentic. The tackles and takedowns
look so real that you almost feel thankful you are sitting in front
of your computer and are not out there! The game has seven game
modes, some of which include World Cup, Tri Nations and Six Nations
competitions and also realistic play-by-play commentary. The game
is suitable for multiplayer gaming and allows two to four players
to play on one computer. If you enjoy sport games and would love
to play rugby without all the rough and tumble of the actual game,
then you are quite likely to enjoy Rugby 2001. Weak hearts might
prefer soccer, though!

Quake
III: Team Arena
More blood and gore
Rating :
ID Software has just released its latest mission pack for Quake III
Arena which is called Quake III: Team Arena. Team Arena differs from
Quake III Arena in that the latter was a multiplayer deathmatch focused
game, while Team Arena is essentially a multiplayer teamplay focused
game. It has five gametypes of which four are essentially teamplay
and one is deathmatch. The game play is, as usual, full of action
and gore which all Quake addicts enjoy. One of the teamplay modes,
called Harvester, requires players to pick up a skull from a particular
point in the map and carry it to a stone in enemy territory to score
a point. In the teamplay mode, the player has to team up with either
other players or with arena bots. The deathmatch mode is a one-on-one
game against an arena bot. The game also boasts of a few new weapons,
one of which is the proximity mine gun which fires small mines that
stick to floors, walls and even players and explode when someone comes
near them or when a certain amount of time goes by. The game also
has all new team powerups and some new awards. Team Arena is an expansion
pack for Quake III: Arena and requires you to have Quake III Arena
already installed in order to play it.

Screamer
4x4
Screamer 4x4 is a rally-style, off-road simulation where one mistake
will find you rolling down a cliff face. Your mission is simple: race
over a variety of courses, driving from point A to point B, passing
through gates that define the route that you must take. Finish in
the top three and move onto the next race. Sounds easy, does it? Well
why don't you try driving up sheer vertical cliffs, trekking it across
uneven ground at high speeds, navigating through water, and dropping
down into deep crevices-all while trying to maintain control of your
4WD and keeping your eye on the time. The limitation in this demo
version is that you can race for eight minutes only.

Venom

Venom is a tactical 3D action game which has you blasting wicked aliens
off the Earth. Alien forces have taken control of a military base
near Tashkent, Uzbekistan. There are nuclear missiles on this base,
which the aliens intend to launch. The base lies underground, below
mountains, so an air strike is impossible. You and your troops will
need to get to base through the sewer system. You will not be able
to remain unseen a long time, and aliens will likely block the main
door to the missile shaft after any alarm sounds. You'll need to get
to the missiles first, because their identification numbers are needed
to cancel the launch. This demo allows you to play on three maps;
two single player maps and one CTF map.

Chakravyuh
v1.01
Stuck in a rut
Rating :
An Indianised storyline, 3D graphics, and the tag of being one of
the first shooters in the market, cannot save Chakravyuh from being
a half-hearted attempt that fails to woo the game playing community
in India. The plot reads like something from a typical period Bollywood
flick. The Asura king Mahachandaal goes about plundering all forms
of life on earth, aided by his powerful army. You play the part of
a messiah, chosen to come to their rescue. Kill the Asuras and challenge
the devil Mahachandaal after breaking through his mystical Chakravyuh.
