THE "'MELINA' PROJECT: EDUCATION AND CULTURE"

The "'Melina' Project: Education and Culture" is a co-operative venture between the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the General Secretariat of Adult Education aimed at bringing children into contact with art through the educational process.

Between 1995 and 1996 the Department of Educational Programmes of the Benaki Museum undertook the researching, development and co-ordination of a programme of museum-based education intended to further children's knowledge of Greek traditional culture. Publications outlining traditional customs and the basic elements of traditional art, proposals for activities and an exhaustive bibliography are included amongst the materials which were prepared for this project. Twenty six educational programmes open to children of the first year of Demotic School were set up in selected regions of Greece. The programmes include preparatory material for teachers and a story or game for the children.

The material which was published as part of the "Melina' Project" can be borrowed from the Benaki Museum's Department of Educational Programmes in the form of educational folders (available only in greek).

EDUCATIONAL KITS

Museum kits are small cases dedicated to different themes which are intended to be used in schools. They have been developed by the Benaki Museum's Department of Educational Programmes in co-operation with expert consultants, and they are available on application to educational institutions, for loans of up to ten days. Although they consist mainly of replicas, original objects are sometimes included in museum kits, as are slides, descriptive information, photographs, books, bibliographies, games, and suggestions for activities and creative tasks.
