Dating to the early 20th century and
designed in a characteristically neo-Gothic style with symmetrical towers and ramparts,
this building is one of the few such houses which have survived in the suburbs of Athen.
Left to the Museum by Vera Kouloura, it is located at Poseidonos Avenue, in Palaio Phaliro
-a seaside suburb of Athens- on grounds totalling 1020,5 m2. The building itself occupies
287, 5 m2 of the total surface area of the grounds, comprising approximately 229 m2 at
basement level, 229 m2 at ground level, and 126 m2 in the towers and the back areas of the
structure.
In comformity with the general scheme for the improvement of the
properties of the Benaki Museum, the V. Kouloura mansion has been designated as the future
home of the collection of children's Toys and Games which was donated to the Museum by
Maria Argyriadi in 1992. The Childhood,
Toys and Games Department is currently housed in the main building of the Benaki Museum. |
