The demo version of Airborne Assault: Red Devils over Arnheim is a "traditional" wargame that is not for the feint of heart. Players get a limited period of time to attempt a decisive outcome. Some experience with strategic simulations will come in handy, but if you're just getting your toes wet, this is as good a place to start as any.

If you want something that will give you a good indication of whether your PC can handle the next generation of games, the America's Army (AA) demo is as good a place to start as any. Stripped of its healthy load of (unintentionally funny) US patriotic spiel, AA is a very worthwhile gaming experience.

The follow-up to the well received Codename Eagle, Battlefield 1942 is a hotly anticipated WWII-based first person shooter from games giant, Electronic Arts. The final release of the game promises the ability to control planes and ships as well as getting down and dirty in the field, soldier-style.
