NookNak

  nooknak1.GIF (2576 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description:

NookNak is a utility that brings a variety of useful functions to your desktop. You can set corners of your screen as hotspots to activate your screen saver, mute your system sounds or FastStart the program of your choice (FastStarting Windows Explorer would be my choice). The size of the corner hotspots (where you put your mouse to activate an option) can be set to anywhere from one pixel to 16 pixels. You can also set a delay before the screen saver is activated or audio is muted.

Another feature that I thought was extremely useful was the option to include the time, day and/or date to the active window's title bar. NookNak's interface is very intuitive and there are help boxes to assist with all options.

Requirements: Shareware
Install instructions: Download to your hard drive, then unzip it and run the EXE file.

My Wedding Organizer

weddin1.GIF (3170 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description:

Weddings are huge events to organise. From the day the engagement is announced until the beginning of the honeymoon, the amount of organisation that has to go into the wedding day is enormous. Soon-to-be-married couples can now reduce the effort and stress involved by planning their big day with My Wedding Organizer.

This program is a lot more comprehensive than I imagined. The well-designed tabbed interface allows you to easily enter data such as the names on the guest list, seating arrangements and caterer's details. There's a To-Do-List with more than 100 pre-defined items which can be added to or deleted. A budgeting module brings together all the costs in one place, and you can easily track invitations and RSVPs for up to seven events (such as the Bachelor Party and Bridal Shower). The printing section helps with invitations, RSVP envelopes, place cards and more. The entire program is very customisable. You can add and delete items to suit your needs; you can even enter the default guest title (such as Mr and Mrs) that will appear on invitations.

With the amount of money people spend on weddings these days, another $50 for this extremely useful program is not going to break the bank.

Requirements: Shareware
Install instructions: Internet Explorer users just click on the file and choose Open to run the setup program straight from the CD. Nestcape users download to your local drive and run the EXE file.

Push The Freakin' Button 1.04

  push1.GIF (3058 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description: If you are becoming annoyed with having to push the same buttons on the same dialog boxes day in, day out then here is your answer. The crudely titled Push The Freakin' Button will wait for configured dialog boxes to pop up and will then automatically press the button you have specified. No longer do you have to confirm the deletion of files. You can hasten your shutdown sequence, and even automatically remove shareware program messages.

Configuring Push The Freakin' Button is a fairly simple affair. When a dialog box appears that you would like to disappear automatically, all you have to do is open Push The Freakin' Button from the system tray and drag the button selection tool onto the button that needs to be pressed. If the selection tool does not recognise the button as a proper control then you can have the selection tool recognise the coordinates of the button instead; which in most cases will perform the same function (some program buttons will not be recognised by Push The Freakin' Button). When the offending dialog box appears there is a delay (default is five seconds) to allow you to click on an alternative button instead of the automatic pressing. Potential targets can be identified from strict to not so precise.

Requirements: Free
Install instructions: Download to your hard drive, then unzip it and run the EXE file.

Talking Email

  talke1.GIF (4214 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description:

Talking Email will read your incoming email to you so that you can occupy yourself with other things at the same time. Set your mail server and account information in the options box, then choose how often you want Talking Email to check for mail. When mail comes in, an animated figure pops up and reads your mail aloud. Talking Email uses the Microsoft Agent technology (as seen in Office) to have animated characters read out your messages. Merlin is the only animated character that comes with the demo version, but he is a laugh. The voice that reads out your messages is not natural but still very clear and able to be understood.

There are also options to specify what is read out, from just the sender to the whole message.

Requirements: 14-day demo.
Install instructions: Internet Explorer users just click on the file and choose Open to run the setup program straight from the CD. Nestcape users download to your local drive and run the EXE file.

Icon Digger 1.2

  icon1.GIF (5849 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description: Whether you are a programmer looking for interesting icons to use in your next project or an ordinary user wishing to find a nice icon for the desktop, Icon Digger will certainly come in useful. There is little use in me describing how to use this program, because it's as straightforward as they come. Simply select an EXE or DLL file from the top display and if the file contains any icons they will be displayed at the bottom. Then you can save any icons that you fancy as ICO files. Icon Digger can also convert any BMP file into ICO format, complete with resizing it to 32x32 proportions.
Requirements: Freeware
Install instructions: Download to your hard drive, then unzip it and run the EXE file.

Work Pace

  workpac1.GIF (5256 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/NT
Description:

I was going to say that this is a great program for anyone concerned about RSI, but then I thought, this program is great for everyone because everyone should be concerned about RSI. The more time you spend at the computer the more risk you have of getting RSI. WorkPace, however, comes to the rescue by reminding you to take micro pauses and proper rest breaks during the day.

Setting up WorkPace involves the answering of a series of questions. These questions find out about your normal computer usage, any set rest breaks you may have and any other factors that allow it to create a custom profile. The WorkPace Status Window sits in the top right-hand corner and displays how long you have till your next break, how many hours of work for the day and week you have left, as well as your overall typing speed.

Pop-up messages advise you when you're exceeding recommended limitations and suggest or even force micro pauses and more lengthy breaks. Exercises and stretches can also be displayed during rest breaks.

WorkPace may initially interrupt your work patterns but once you become accustomed to the breaks you will realise how beneficial this program is.

Requirements: 30-day trial
Install instructions: Internet Explorer users just click on the file and choose Open to run the setup program straight from the CD. Nestcape users download to your local drive and run the EXE file.

Hotmail Express

  hot_exp1.gif (2057 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description:

Months ago I tried to configure my Eudora email client to download my messages from my Hotmail account; with no success. Hotmail Express, however, allows you to download Hotmail messages through any POP mail client. It is simple to set up and easy to use. Just install it then enter the appropriate POP and SMTP settings in your mail client. After that there is little else to be done. Hotmail Express also has a system tray icon that notifies you when it is downloading messages from Hotmail.

FYI, the following mail clients have instructions on how to set up Hotmail Express: MS Outlook Express, MS Outlook 97, MS Outlook 98, ICQ, Netscape 3.0, Netscape 4.0, Eudora Lite 3.0, Eudora Pro 3.0, Eudora Pro 4.0, Internet Mail and Pegasus Mail 2.5.

Requirements: Freeware
Install instructions: Internet Explorer users just click on the file and choose Open to run the setup program straight from the CD. Nestcape users download to your local drive and run the EXE file.

Virtual Drive

  virtual1.gif (3570 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description:

If you are always inserting the same CD-ROMs into your drive to access data, you may find Virtual Drive very useful. Virtual Drive can create an image of a CD-ROM and then give you access to that data through a new drive letter. This virtual drive is then accessible through Explorer like any other drive. You can do this with as many CDs as you want and the image can be compressed to save space.

Using Virtual Drive is easy. Simply insert the CD that you want to create an image of and then click on Build VCD. Depending on how much data is on the CD and what compression ratio you select, this process can take from a few seconds to several minutes. Once the image has been created and mounted as a new drive you do not need to keep Virtual Drive running.

Requirements: 30-day evaluation
Install instructions: Download to your hard drive, then unzip it and run the EXE file.

Media Changer Deluxe 4.03

  media1.GIF (3193 bytes)

Download the version for your operating system here:

Win 95/98
Description:

Not content with having the same wallpaper, screen saver and sound scheme every time you start Windows? Media Changer Deluxe will ensure that you do not get bored with your media settings as it cycles through different media settings each time you start up. You can also elect to have Media Changer change these settings with a click of the button or at specified time intervals.

An easy-to-use, tabbed setup screen has options to randomise, finetune, and enable or disable changes for each category. Not only can you rotate the standard Windows event sounds, but the program supports changing event sounds for other programs (if it's in the Control Panel's Sounds panel then Media Changer Deluxe can manipulate it.) Wallpaper options include automatic stretching or tiling based on criteria you set, plus you can use JPG files as well as BMP images.

Along with your wallpaper, screen saver and sound scheme, Media Changer can cycle through any installed themes. It is a good idea to have a number of different wallpapers, screen savers and sounds, or else using this program is a waste of time. Variety is the spice of life, so make use of Media Changer Deluxe and get a bit of variety onto your computer.
