December OS/2 Shareware

Managing money — we all have to do it. So this month we look at some shareware programs that could make the job a little easier.

Products in this section:

Windows:
Drag and File Gold, Virtual Drive, File-Ex 98 2.12b, SiSoft Sandra for Windows 98 7.4.10, Trial Magician

OS/2: Versions, Bank 1.1.0b, Electronic Teller, In Control 1.60, PM Mortgage Calculator 1.10

Mac: Mt Everything 1.1, Stripper 1.1, ZapResForks 1.0.1, Frank's White Cells

Linux: tkWorld, OpenLDAP, XNotesPlus, GXedit, xpulse

Before you install a shareware program that you have downloaded from the Net, you should always check the version information. You could be downloading an old version with limited features, or even an experimental one that could crash your workstation. Generally, the first release version is 1.00 — there may be versions before this one, but they are usually 'under construction' versions. When the author makes a minor improvement, the version number is incremented (for example: 1.00 becomes 1.01). But when a major change occurs (a lot of extra functionality, or a new PM interface, for example) the version number increments to the next whole integer (for example: 1.54 becomes 2.00). A word of warning: if the version code ends with either a or b — beware! Alpha versions (for example, 1.32a) have undergone little testing at all, and beta versions (for example, 2.46b) have been tested at a base level, but have usually been released for others to test. If an alpha or beta release falls over and you lose data, or even suffer hardware damage, you have used the program at you own risk!

BanK 1.1.0b
If you use money, you need to budget. BanK help you do exactly that, and although only a beta version, it is a fully featured PM application that helps you balance your books.

As you can see from the screen shot, it is laid out simply, with an intuitive interface. You add activities to the Label column and BanK will initially ask you for the date the activity took place. Click on the label field and a pop-up window appears prompting you to enter the payment method (cash, cheque and so on) and whether the activity falls into one of the predefined categories (for example, food, rent, gas). After assigning a positive or negative effect (for example, pay is positive, rent is negative) you enter the amount. Clicking 'OK' adds the activity to the main window, but the pop-up window stays open so you can enter more activities. Activities that occur often can be easily added to the predefined category list, making it much simpler for you in future.

One of the things I really like is the ability to access all of the functions from the toolbar — you don't need to dig through endless cascading menus, even for the obscure functions. The only real turn-off is a slight loss in continuity in some of the dialog boxes — sometimes you're not quite sure what to do next. Otherwise, it is well worth registering to obtain the final version.

Electronic Teller
Somewhat like In Control (see below), Electronic Teller has a few different features including multiple-user support to shield accounts from one another. If you don't like the default OS/2 calculator, one is built in so you can paste calculations directly into entry fields of the main application. Another feature is the configurable cheque printer that supports user-defined designs and multiple cheque-per-page printing — cool! A very handy feature is budget tracking and graphing — you can plot your budgeting over time to really see how you're going. If you need it, there is even international currency support including conversion to and from a domestic currency.

In Control 1.60
One of the first things a lot of our readers do is look at the shareware price — and I know what a lot of you are thinking! Let me assure you that In Control is an extremely comprehensive account management system aimed at the small to medium business rather than the home user. Cash, cheque, savings, credit union, and credit card accounts are handled with ease, and other functions include recording, editing, and deletion of transactions. Balancing account statements (including credit accounts) is made simple. Well, almost simple — In Control can still seem daunting to someone who isn't really familiar with business account management, and, although it is simpler than other programs, you can tweak your accounts quite a lot.

Budgeting is also covered. Income and expenses can be tracked by category on a monthly basis and compared to the budgeted amounts -- very helpful!

Bill management (payables/receivables) is the third system, including tracking, control, and payment/collection of bills, loans, and monies due. If desired, you can even print cheques to pay a logged bill. And there's more: property, securities (worth a look), insurance and even a tax management system.

Please note this program was written for the US market, so quite a few of the comprehensive features (especially those in the tax management system) may not apply to you. As I've mentioned, In Control is very detailed, and might be a little heavy for most of our readers. It is a whole package, akin to the Microsoft Office suite, and does almost everything, including some things you don't need.

PM Mortgage Calculator 1.10
There's not much to say about PM Mortgage Calculator, except that it's simple, yet very effective. It computes payment information for fixed-rate amortised loans. The user can supply any three of the four mortgage parameters; principal, interest, term (number of months) and monthly payment. The fourth parameter is calculated automatically. Not so interesting? The fantastic thing is the report — PM Mortgage Calculator produces a payment schedule, indicating the principal, interest, remaining principal, and total interest on a month-by-month basis. To demonstrate, the screenshot shows a loan (this time for a car, not a house) initially costing $15,000 at an interest rate of 7.5% over three years. Pressing 'compute' calculates the unspecified parameter (monthly payment), and fills the lower box with the mortgage schedule. You can save the schedule or print it out to take along to your bank manager.
