System Requirements

smIRCle comes in two flavours: a 68K and a PPC version. There is currently no "fat" Version. Therefore if you are unsure which version would be the right one for your computer, I'd suggest using the 68K version, as this will run on a PPC machine too.

smIRCle takes about 700KB for the 68K and about 900KB for the PPC version. Without virtual memory, the PPC version needs about 1.1MB.

smIRCle is a TCP-based (internet) application. This means you have to have either the MacTCP or the TCP/IP control panel installed on your machine. If you can access the internet from your machine (eg. you are using Netscape), TCP is already installed. Of course you also need a connection to the internet, either a modem or an ethernet link. smIRCle needs system 7.1 or better and is tested on system 8.x and 9.0. AppleGuide should be installed; to be able to use hyperlinks to web-pages, the internet-config system should be installed.

Setting up smIRCle

Upon the first startup, smIRCle sets up the preferences in a way that should allow most users to connect sucessfully to a IRC network and launches a setup helper application. After you gained some experience with IRC you will wish to configure those settings to reflect your personal needs, eg. filling in your personal information, choosing a unique nick etc. All the program settings are accessible through the "settings" button on the button-board. A dialog with different panels appears, where you can edit the default values. Changes take effect only after pressing the "OK" button and are discarded if you press "Cancel" instead.

IVC demon

smIRCle does regular checks if a new version is available with the help of the Internet version control demon. This program is launched in the background whenever you open a connection to a IRC network. If it finds that a newer version of smIRCle is available, smIRCle will notify you. No personal data like email adresses or such are transmitted to the server. You can disable the IVC demon via the preferences panel (see "misc. settings").

Troubleshooting

Failing Connections

Occassionately you will not be able to log on to a server. This may have different reasons, most likely this server does not allow users from outside its own domain. Sometimes servers are overloaded and reject new connections. Another possibility is that someone from your domain did not behave according to the rules and therefore the whole domain is banned from using the server. Solution: try another server.

URLs don't work

If you click on a URL which is underlined but no browser starts, first check to see if the control panel "Internet config" (systems 7 and 8) or "Internet" (system 8.5 or higher) are installed and a browser is specified there. If you get a message from the finder saying that not enough RAM is available you may have to quit one or more running programs.

The Program Hangs

If the Program does not react to mouse-clicks or keyboard input you may have to force-quit it (command-option-escape). If this happens while it is connecting to a server, disable the IVC demon (preferences -> Misc. Prefs). Solution: contact me with a detailed description.

The Program Crashes

Some system extensions may reduce the stability of your computer causing crashes in running programs. Try to activate only the absolutely necessary set of extensions. Solution: contact me with a detailed description.
