ICQ 2000: Method 1 (through SOCKS 5)
You should Configure the ICQ software
in the non-gateway machine to Connect via LAN and to use SOCKS5
proxy.
You can do this while installing the ICQ software
or after installing do the following:
- Open ICQ preferences
- Click on Connections
and select General Tab
- Select connection type
Permanent (LAN, cable modem, etc.)
- Next, select at Firewall
IP Settings the option ICQ will determine IP automatically
- Click on Server
Tab
- For Proxy Settings choose
Using Firewall and Choose Using Proxy
- Choose SOCKS 5
from the proxy list.
- Click on Firewall
Tab, For Proxies/ Firewalls choose SOCKS 5
- Enter the IP address
of your gateway machine as the SOCKS server.
- Enter port 1080
- Do not configure a SOCKS
password
- Select use proxy to
resolve hostnames
- Click on User
Tab
- Select Use server
proxy settings
For SOCKS feature to
work from the client machines, you have to first ENABLE DNS under Network properties
in the client machines. How to..?
When you are installing
ICQ and after completing the new/existing user fields, follow the procedure
below when you get the Retry/Connection settings screen.
- Choose Connection
Settings
- Select Using Firewall
- Select Connect Using
Proxy
- Enter the IP address
of your gateway/pppshar machine
- Enter port 1080
- Select as protocol SOCKS
5
- Enable Use Proxy to
resolve hostnames
Other
Versions:
- Click the ICQ Main
Menu and Go to Preferences.
- Click the Connection Tab.
- Select "I am using a permanent
Internet connection (LAN)"
- Then Select "I am behind a firewall
or proxy" and then Click "Firewall Settings"
button
- This will bring the "ICQ Firewall
Settings Wizard"
- Select "I am using a SOCKS5 proxy
server" and then Click "Next" button
- Under SOCKS 5 Host field type
192.168.0.1 or the gateway machine IP and
Port = 1080 Leave other fields blank
- Click Next and Done.

ICQ: Method 2 (through SOCKS 4)
You should Configure the ICQ software
in the non-gateway machine to Connect via LAN and to use SOCKS4
proxy and the mapped UDP port.
You can do this while installing the ICQ software
or after installing do the following:
- Click the ICQ Main Menu and
Go to Preferences.
- Click the Connection Tab.
- Select "I am using a permanent
Internet connection (LAN)"
- Then Select "I am behind a firewall
or proxy" and then Click "Firewall Settings"
button
- Select "I am using a SOCKS4 proxy
server" and then Click "Next" button. This will bring;
- The "ICQ Firewall Settings Wizard"
- Type SOCKS 4 Host = 192.168.0.1
or the gateway machine IP
SOCKS4 Port = 1080 and
- under "UDP Port Allocation"
Select "Use a mapped port on a proxy" and Type:
Proxy Server Host = 192.168.0.1 or the gateway machine IP
Proxy Server Port = 4000 and Click Done.
