| Description: | In late 1995 and for most of 1996, one of the most popular free downloads on the Internet was PointCast. It offered a fast, customisable view of daily news and stock market information which updated itself in the background while the computer was online. It was the first attempt at providing an 'agent' which selected news from topic areas that interested the user, and could be set to run as a screensaver instead of stealing memory space from other applications. PointCast made its money from advertising, which was shown constantly in one pane of the application window. As portal sites grew, PointCast faded. Earlier this year, however, the firm was bought by the developers of eWallet, an ecommerce application which automatically places credit card information in online order forms (similar to Microsoft Wallet). The company was renamed EntryPoint and has released a free news ticker which attempts to combine the two applications.The EntryPoint toolbar sits at the top of the screen. Customisable news, sports, weather and stock market information is combined with drop-down lists of online shopping possibilities. Headlines scroll past, and clicking on one will bring up the full story in a browser window. | ||||
