Complete Program Deleter 3.0
The Add/Remove programs utility included with Windows 95/NT seemed a great idea. It's a pity not all program developers include the necessary uninstallation procedures with their programs. Complete Program Deleter provides easier uninstallation for those programs that do not have the ability to be uninstalled.

Uninstalling programs using this utility is a little cumbersome and time consuming, but in the end it's easier than finding and deleting each file that may have been hidden in the \windows or \windows\system directory. The Complete Program Deleter process involves the creation of a 'Before' file and an 'After' file that records the changes to your hard drive when a new program is installed. When you want to uninstall a program, it will remove any files that were added, as recorded by the 'After' file.

One little gripe concerns the fact that the Complete Program Deleter is installed in your \windows and \windows\system directories. Added to this, when you want to uninstall the Complete Program Deleter you have to go through the aforementioned directories and delete any associated files manually.

ShrewdEX 1.1
ShrewdEX is a shell context menu that allows folders to be browsed by a simple right-click, as well as providing improved file management functions within the drag & drop menu.

Easy to install and well designed, ShrewdEX has three main functions. When you right-click a drive or folder there will be an extra item called 'ShrewdEX' which gives you instant access to the drives and folders on your machine. Dragging a file, or files, with the right button to a folder or drive will result in two added menus from the default that allows you to move or copy the particular file(s) to a subfolder. If the file being dragged is a ZIP file you are given two additional items allowing you to extract the file's contents to the current folder or a subfolder.

If you use Windows Explorer primarily for file management, then there's not much advantage in ShrewdEX. If, on the other hand, you use the 'My Computer' for managing files you will definitely find this program helpful.

Nico's Commander 4.02
Similar to Norton's Commander, this file management utility offers several handy features. The main screen consists of two alternate windows each displaying file details. Filtering files by extension, creating associations, and modifying file attributes are easily performed, and the ability to compare the contents of directories and files may come in handy. Commonly used applications can have their own buttons configured for instant loading. If you are connected to the Internet, FTP sites can be used as if they were a local disk. Zip and unzip functions are built into Nico's Commander, as to is a text editor that can replace Notepad.

If desired, Nico's Commander will display the time and date on the title bar of the current application. It will also put an icon in the system tray that gives you instant access to any desktop icons, and if you like to shut down your PC in a hurry, a one-click shut-down icon in the system tray will do just that (but be careful not to accidentally click on this, as there is no prompt giving you the opportunity to change your mind).

Command Prompt Facelift
For those who still resort to the trusty DOS command line for doing certain tasks, the Command Prompt Facelift may be for you. This little utility integrates the command prompt with Windows, allowing more flexible commands and easier integration between the two working environments.

Some of the main features of Command Prompt Facelift are its ability to remember the last 100 commands, its ability to understand Windows 95's file associations, and its auto-suggestion feature that speeds up commonly used commands.

When a DIR command is performed, Command Prompt Facelift displays the contents in its own special window, so there is no interaction with the DOS interface at all. The design is very intuitive and does not take up much space. An added feature is the ability to launch Web and FTP sites by typing in the address.

Pointix Engine 3.02
Pointix Engine is one of those utilities that makes using your computer a little bit easier. If there is one New & Hot program that every reader should install onto their system and try out for a while, it's definitely this one. It has absolutely everything.

The main feature behind the Pointix Engine is called a glick (short for glide-click). A glick involves shaking the mouse pointer in motions that are rarely used during normal operation. There is a clockwise glick, a counter-clockwise glick, as well as up-and-down and left-to-right glicks. A glick can open applications, documents or Web pages, it can execute keyboard macros, or display a customised menu with more options.

Along with the special Pointix Desktop Utilities and Office Utilities (which include things such as a calendar, alarm, and card file utility), I must also make special mention of the Pointix Scroll++ feature. Scrolling through documents and Web pages has never been easier. I think it's even better than Microsoft's mouse with the roller in the middle. All you have to do is hold down the right mouse button and it will scroll in the direction that your mouse was last pointing. It even has different scrolling speeds.

DeskPad 98
Desk Pad 98 is a miniature desktop that can sit in any corner of your normal desktop; it can even have its own background. Desk Pad 98 contains commonly used applications that can be launched with one click. There are icons for the Control Panel, Dial-up Networking, Calculator and Notepad, as well as a My Programs icon which can be customised. Unfortunately, you can't create icons of your own for your most commonly used programs; you have to access them through the My Programs icon.

Other features include automatic notification of new email and an Internet search utility that can use one of the six top search engines. There is also a scratch pad for temporary storing of information such as Web addresses, as well as a note application where thoughts can be scribbled.

Internet Neighborhood 1.5
Internet Neighborhood allows you to browse remote FTP sites within the Windows 95/NT Explorer. Setting up frequently used FTP sites is made simple with the FTP site wizard. Files can be uploaded and downloaded by dragging and dropping, the same as you would to transfer files from a network drive. There are also extra buttons added to Windows Explorer. There isn't much more to say, as you probably already know how to use Windows Explorer, and that is really all you need to know to be able to use Internet Neighborhood.

AtomTime 2.0
AtomTime is a very useful utility that checks your system time with a time server. Any difference between your system time and the time server can be adjusted with a click of the button. Time zone differences are taken into account as long as you have the correct setup in Windows 95's Date/Time Properties.

The AtomTime servers can be used or your own preferred time servers can be entered. The time from the time server can either be shown as the actual time of the server that you are using, GMT time, or your local time. Time updates can be configured to happen automatically.

Sim Fish 2
And now for some comic relief. Sim Fish 2 is a fish management game where the goal is to earn $75 by breeding and selling fish. In order to reach this goal you must look after your fish and keep their fish bowl suitable for breeding.

There are a variety of fish that can be purchased, from simple goldfish to the more exotic cat and dog fish. Whenever algae appears or your little fishies do their business you must clean the bowl by pressing the appropriate button. Feeding your fish and encouraging them to mate are both done by dropping pellets into the bowl. You can also buy special treats for your fish to make their lives more enjoyable, so they will live longer for you. It is not very encouraging for your fish to see their mates dead and floating in the water so get rid of any skeletons that may be floating around.

Sim Fish 2 is a zany game that may even have you pondering the question of life . . . the least it will do is bring you an hour or so of wacky fun.

Buzof
Just because the makers of this software can't spell doesn't mean that they can't create a handy utility that will automatically get rid of annoying message boxes. The annoying message boxes in question will vary from person to person; for me it's 'If you change a filename extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?'. I know what I'm doing and don't need this message interrupting me, so now Buzof gets rid of it within a blink of the eye.

Setting up Buzof is simple. Just make the annoying message boxes appear, then use Buzof's crosshair to select the button that you would normally click to dismiss or minimise the offending window. Then Buzof will scan your desktop for the offending message boxes. The time between scans can be set by you, but one scan per second will ensure that any boxes will be no longer almost immediately after they have appeared.

Linkbot 3.5f
Maintaining a Web site is a tough job. Webmasters know the importance of keeping a site free of broken links. Web users are already troubled by slow download times, so the least you can do is make sure the link they click on will actually take them somewhere.

Linkbot is a site management utility that helps Webmasters maintain, test and organise their sites. Broken links, missing images, stale content and orphaned files can be easily located and taken care of. If your site is made up of distinct subsections then Linkbot can use filters that isolate these subsections for easier management. Implementing the scheduler allows Linkbot to check any number of sites automatically at regular times during the day or week

The structure of your site can be easily visualised with the Explorer-style interface that is automatically updated as each link is checked. Linkbot can also create comprehensive HTML reports that summarise the findings into nine sections. This reporting feature is very impressive, as it allows you to draw conclusions that may not have been identified by looking at the interface.

Surf Express 1.1.2
There are many programs available that use some kind of cache technology to reduce the amount of time spent downloading Web pages. In this case the cache technology used by Surf Express is called FASTore, and SmartFetch is the technology used to keep your favourite pages up-to-date automatically.

Surf Express learns which pages you visit most often and automatically checks these as you surf to see if they need updating. Surf Express works in the background but you can open its window and look at the statistics which indicate the percentage of pages you have accessed that have been loaded from the cache and what percentage have been completely downloaded from the Web.

FindCahe is a feature of Surf Express which is particularly handy. It allows you to enter keywords which are then looked up in previously surfed pages. This allows you to view whole pages after you have disconnected.

There have been similar Internet-cache applications in New & Hot before and there will undoubtedly be others in the future. Any program that can reduce the time spent on downloading Web pages is always worth a try, Surf Express may be just the answer for improving your time spent online.

As-Easy-As
As-Easy-As is a brilliant spreadsheet application that rivals its higher priced equivalents. Not limited in its functionality and as simple to use as any other spreadsheet application, As-Easy-As offers something for everyone. Whether your need is a quick table that does automatic calculations or you have more technical statistical requirements, you will be able to do it in As-Easy-As. It features more than 130 maths, financial, scientific, statistical, string, date, and time functions. Macros can be recorded to make your work easier, and they can be assigned to the colourful icons located to the right of the workspace.

Inexperienced spreadsheet users are taken care of with a detailed help file and sample worksheets that illustrate how to get the most out of the application. Advanced users will be happy to note that a selection of advanced tools and functions is also available.

The demo version lasts for 30 days or 200 uses, whichever comes first. After your evaluation period you will no longer be able to save or print worksheets. If you don't already have a spreadsheet program, you could do worse than to purchase As-Easy-As for $US59.
