Players in this game are allowed to control any of 13 different civilisations. While many of the game’s units and structures are generic, each civilisation also has its own unique unit. These include everything from British Longbows to Persian War Elephants. The designers have also tweaked the resource costs of particular units, structures, research and development. This incredibly addictive and compelling real time strategy game certainly deserves ‘classic’ status.

The elaborate sci-fi storyline follows the plight of an alien race based on the planet Kharak. The Kharakians construct a mother ship capable of transporting them back to their Homeworld. The player thus commands a fleet of spacecraft as they zoom around vast celestial expanses. Control can be tricky at times, and the new Z dimension takes more than a bit of getting used to. Thankfully Homeworld features a nifty tutorial which guides players through the basics of interface and game control.
