America Online with the NewsTicker

You can use AOL as your internet connection to access the NewsTicker. However you must have installed one of the supported browsers: Netscape, NCSA Mosaic, or Internet Explorer. AOL users must install the 16 bit version of NewsTicker.

This is recommended for AOL users who do not have other Internet access options.

  1. At the AOL Main Menu dialog box, select the Keyword Icon. Enter as a keyword: winsock
  2. Download winsock.aol (it automatically downloads into the directory c:\windows). If multiple winsocks exist, they must all be renamed or deleted. Rename the winsock.aol to winsock.dll.
  3. To access Netscape, enter Keyword Netscape and download Netscape 1.2. Follow the directions to install Netscape.
  4. Exit Windows and restart.
  5. Restart AOL
  6. Double click on your NewsTicker icon.

Firewalls

If you are behind a firewall the SOCKS or HTTP proxy server setup for NewsTicker needs to be identical to your browser SOCKS or HTTP proxy server setup. If you are unsure whether or not you are behind a firewall, or what kind of server you are using, please see your system administrator.

Server Setup

NewsTicker supports customers connected with SOCKS and HTTP proxy servers. SOCKS and HTTP proxy servers allow connection from behind a firewall to the internet.

The Server Setup window has the following fields.

System/Network administrators may "adapt" SOCKS and HTTP proxy servers to allow connections to NewsTicker. However, no representation is made as to security degradations/vulnerabilities this may impose.

Characteristics

SOCKS server

SOCKS is a generic proxy system that can be compiled into a client-side application to establish a connection through a firewall. It is easy to use, but it doesn't support the addition of authentication hooks or protocol specific logging. SOCKS servers verify authorization of the "requestor" and that access to the destination address/port number is authorized.

If the "requestor" and destination address/port number are authorized then the SOCKS server establishes the connection. If "invalid" the SOCKS server rejects the request.

HTTP proxy server

HTTP proxy servers are protocol specific. Therefore, to support a new protocol via an HTTP proxy, an HTTP proxy must be developed for it. Rather than communicating "directly" the client and server both talk to the HTTP proxy. The HTTP proxy server establishes the remote connection, passing the information back to the client transparently.

HTTP proxy servers are high level "transactional" type servers. HTTP proxy servers do not establish a "conversation" to complete a request. Rather, an HTTP proxy server requests and returns results. (e.g.: HTTP proxy requests a web page and returns the results).
