Some Things That Work For Me

By Karen Adler

Some of TGF's prettiest readers have agreed to share with us their favorite style, beauty and "how-to" tips. This week features ideas from is Karen Adler, a lovely lady from California

I use MAC makeup, because ..well, it's trendy. The salespeople are really tuned in, and the ones who've helped me seem to get a kick out of working with crossdressers. I've learned lots of neat little tricks from them.

I make up to look sexy. Of course, I wear less during the day, but paint it on at night. I have a thin upper lip, and a decent lower one. I fill the upper one out, above the lip line, with a pencil. I like full, luscious lips. After I blot, I use powder to set the lipstick. It will stay on for hours.

I shop Nordstrom, especially their discount Rack, Saks, particularly their outlet if I can find one, but most often Loehman's, which is the ultimate shopping fantasy.

Go dressed. I do. That's the whole idea isn't it? Although I'm a size 12, and small, 5'7"(size 8 women's shoe), most salespeople can guess you're a guy in drag, especially when we open our mouths. So what? It breaks up a dull day for them, and they help you co-ordinate and avoid mistakes.

Salespeople at Nordstrom have often taken me in hand, and helped put together entire outfits from shoes to jewelry, lingerie to outerwear. It's a kick for me, and good commissions for them.

If you've anything special flaunt it. I have good legs (Miss Modesty here). So I wear short skirts. I figure if they're looking at my legs they won't be so picky about the rest (a little self delusion).

I keep my legs, and body, well groomed. I use a Braun SilkEpil..ouch, but it's better than shaving because I only have to use it every few weeks. I also try to stay tan (instead of stockings), I work out, and I diet to keep my weight to…(none of your business).

I do pay attention to my body no matter what clothes (guy or gal) I choose to wear. It makes it easier to wear either.

Love,
Karen Adler
