Ski Racing Magazine reports that Erica took first place in the women's downhill competition at the 1966 World Championships in Portillio, Chile, beating out Marielle Goitschl of France for the Gold Medal. After the race, a saliva test showed the presence of male hormones. Further testing showed that Erica had a set of internal male reproductive organs.
All of this was news to Erica, who went on to have sex reassignment surgery and even fathered children. Eric Schinegger became the first athlete to win major international competitions in both sexes.
Aproximately eight years ago Schinegger presented Goitschl with the gold medal from the '66 championships. Last December 14th a ceremony was held in Val d'sire commemorating the 30 year anniversary of the event where Goitschl was finally officially recognized as the winner of the race. "I'm very moved to be able to wear this medal officialy after having recieved it eight years ago from Eric, who really made a remarkable gesture," she said.
It all goes to show that TG's are not only good people, we are good sports as well.
