NY Mayor Giuliani
Does Drag Turn for Media

New York

For once, the mayor's job was a real drag.

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who seems to revel in his role as a tough politician, stunned friends and foes alike by traips- ing before 2,000 people Satur- day night dressed as a woman.

Guiliani swept onstage in a huge, blond, bouffant wig and a bosomy gown for the finale at the "Inner Circle" dinner, a $400-plate, black-tie affair where the city's journalists sati- rize city, state and national poli- tics.

Giuliani performed a star- tling' reprise of Marilyn' Mon- roe's famous, breathless sere- nade to John F. Kennedy, "Hap- py birthday, Mr. President."

After a monologue zapping City Hall reporters, he cavorted with actress Julie Andrews, star of the hit, Broadway musical, "Victor/Victoria," about a woman masquerading as a gay female impersonator. Giuliani called his feminine alter ego "Rudia."

Giuliani, running for a sec- ond term this year, remarked that he is "a Republican pre- tending to be a Democrat pre- tending to be a Republican."
