Barbie's First Outing

by Rebecca Buchanan

"Ken! What are you doing wearing my clothes?!"

"Huh? Oh! B-Barbie, Hi! I-I was going to go outside for a walk!" That. was me providing the voices for my sister's dolls. I had long ago retrieved them from the back of her closet where she had retired them and when I was alone in the house, I would pull them out and play with them. It was while playing with them that I first got the inspiration to go out in the real world dressed as a girl.

I pulled my long blond hair back and attached a mane comb, put on a little makeup and dug one of my sister Margie's outfits from out of her hamper. After a pair of her panties, a bra stuffed with socks and a pair of pantyhose were in place, I pulled on a Iight green t-shirt. Over this came a short, short green plaid skirt and a dark green jacket with the sleeves pushed up above my elbows. I slipped my feet into the dark green flat shoes that Margie wore with this ensemble. Her gold circle bracelet, a gold necklace and gold clip-on earrings completed the transformation. Except for my blond hair, I was a carbon copy of Margie, who was a brunette.

I was ready to face the world! I hurried downstairs before I could talk myself out of it and opened the front door. Seeing the neighborhood was deserted, I closed the door behind me and slipped around the side of the house. Our yard was surrounded by a high privacy fence that would shield me from nosy neighbors. The back of the yard led down to a creek that if followed for about 2 miles would bring you to a shopping center. I intended to head there, walk around a bit then head back home before Margie or my parents got home.

I had reached the gate at the rear of the yard when I suddenly remembered I didn't have a key! It was in my pants pocket on the floor of Margie's bedroom! I scampered back across the yard, back around the house and up onto the porch. I tried the door - locked!

Just then I heard a car coming down the street. I ran to the edge of the porch and saw Margie's battered old Nova rumbling toward the house. Panic! I shot off the porch and flew around the house again. I had nowhere else to go. I stopped behind the large oak tree that dominated our back yard, and peaked out toward the house. I could hear girlish voices and car doors being slammed shut. Then the voices stopped as everyone had gone into the house.

I slumped down behind the tree and, pulling my legs together, sunk my head onto my knees, trying to decide what to do. I figured they couldn't stay in the house too long, and they certainly had no reason to come out into the back yard, so my decision was to just sit and wait them out. But how would I get back into the house without a key? And Margie was sure to find my clothes in her room...

At that moment I heard the back door of the house open and feminine voices coming toward me. My heart began pumping blood through my veins at a furious rate, my eyes bulged, my mouth went arid.

"Hi! Whatcha doing?" I looked up at the face peering around the side of the tree. I didn't recognize her. Then, one by one, girls I had never seen before came around the tree and stood facing me. Including Margie.

"Do you know her?" the girl said to my sister. I looked at her in a wide eyed frenzy. "Of course I know her," she said sardonically. I could do nothing, I was in her power. She could expose me to her friends, and I would be ruined - a laughing stock.

"This is my little sister Barbie," she said at last. "And she's being very bad - getting my new outfit all dirty out here. Get up, Barbie!" I stood, trembling, still not trusting her.

"She's adorable," said one of the girls. "You two could be twins!"

"YOU march right into that house and take off my clothes, girl," Margie said, raising her voice slightly. I just stared at her, not really comprehending.

I turned and ran, not being very feminine about it, but not caring. I ran through the back door, up the basement steps, into the living room. There I saw the dolls - Ken still in drag laying on the coffee table. I scooped them up and bolted upstairs.

I peeled off Margie's clothes and jewelry and wiped off the makeup. I put my own clothes back on and locked myself in my room. I waited for her to come and drop the other shoe - reveal who I really was to her friends so they could have a good laugh. But she didn't.

About ten minutes later, she yelled from downstairs, "We're going now, Barbie. You better stay away from my clothes - you have plenty of pretty things of your own. You be a good girl or I'll tell Mom about this little episode!" They left the house and I heard the car start up and pull away.

So that was her game, eh? Blackmail! She had me in her clutches. I now had to sweat it out until she got home and confronted me for real.

I didn't have to wait long. She came back home, alone, about half an hour later. She came right upstairs and knocked on my door. I sheepishly opened it.

"I nearly had a heart attack over you!" she said angrily. " Abby thought she had seen someone run around the house when we pulled up and we thought it was a burglar! Then we see my old Barbie dolls in the living room and this girl sitting behind the tree in the back yard! I kind of figured it out by then and tried to get them to leave again, but they had to see who was sitting in the back yard. I didn't say anything because I thought you were going to look ridiculous, but you pulled it off. They thought you were my sister!"

"I'm sorry - I won't do it again, I promise! Just don't tell Mom and Dad!"

"Don't worry, I won't. If you want to dress up like a girl, that's your business. Just take care of my clothes, okay? No more sitting in the dirt behind trees?"

"Don't worry, I'll never dress up again. I swear."

"Sure. And what do I tell my friends when they want to invite Barbie to go out with us?"

We both smiled.

Did I mention how much I loved my sister?

The End
