Advanced security and warning options

Microsoft Internet Explorer allows you to change a number of advanced security and warning options. For most people, the default settings for these options may never need changing. However, they are available to you for your convenience, should you ever want to check or change them.

To view advanced security and warning options

  1. On the View menu, click Options.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.

  3. In the Advanced list, look under the Security heading.

Warnings

Internet Explorer offers a number of warnings that can be displayed before you, a Web site, or your computer can complete an action. If you choose to have a warning displayed, you will not be able to complete an action until you have clicked OK. But if you feel that a particular action should never pose any threat to your computer or information, then the warning may be an unnecessary interruption, and you may want to turn it off.

Security Protocols

Security Protocols allow you to send and receive secured information. Both the Web site and your browser must use the same protocol in order for information to be secured. All secure Web sites support SSL2 (Secured Sockets Layer Level 2). In addition, Internet Explorer supports PCT (Private Communications Technology), a proprietary protocol developed by Microsoft that is significantly more secure than SSL2.

If you are using Internet Explorer from a shared server and do not want other people to see your secure information, you may want to select the Do not save secure pages to disk check box. That way, secured information is not saved to your hard disk.
