Using Administration Tools

You have a choice of two administration tools for operating Microsoft NNTP Service. You can perform all of the required tasks for setting up and managing Microsoft NNTP Service with either tool. Your choice of tool depends on how you connect to the service.

The administration tools are:

Both administration tools are installed by default when you install Microsoft NNTP Service. You can also use these tools to operate the service from another computer.

Operators need to be granted permissions to operate Microsoft NNTP Service; see Configuring Security.

Installing Internet Service Manager on a Different Computer

Internet Service Manager is installed by the IIS setup program. Internet Service Manager runs as a snap-in to Microsoft Management Console.

You can use Internet Service Manager on a computer other than the one on which your are running Microsoft NNTP Service. To operate the service from another computer, you need to install Internet Service Manager on that computer.

To install Internet Service Manager on another computer:

  1. Run the IIS Setup program on the target computer, and select Custom.
  2. In the Components box, clear any selected components.
  3. In the Components box, select Internet Information Server, and choose Show Subcomponents.
  4. In the Subcomponents of Internet Information Server (IIS) box, select the Internet Service Manager checkbox. Clear any other selected components.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Using Internet Service Manager

You can operate Microsoft NNTP Service using Internet Service Manager on any computer that is on the same LAN as Microsoft NNTP Service.

If you need more information about an option displayed by Internet Service Manger, choose Help.

To start Internet Service Manager:

  1. From the Start menu, choose Programs, Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, Microsoft Internet Information Server, and Internet Service Manager.
  2. Expand the IIS node hierarchy and select the entry for Microsoft NNTP Service. The default name is Default NNTP Site.

    If you are running Internet Service Manager on a computer other than the one on which your are running Microsoft NNTP Service, select any computer under IIS. Then from the Action menu, choose Connect. In the Computer Name box, enter the name of the Microsoft NNTP Service computer you want to operate.

To access Microsoft NNTP Service properties:

  1. Select the entry for Microsoft NNTP Service.
  2. From the Action menu, choose Properties.
  3. Select the tab of the property sheet you want to access.

To access expiration policy or virtual directory properties:

  1. Expand the Microsoft NNTP Service node. The default name is Default NNTP Site.
  2. Select Expiration policies or Directories.
  3. Select the expiration policy or virtual directory.
  4. From the Action menu, choose Properties.

Using Internet Service Manager (HTML)

You can operate Microsoft NNTP Service using Internet Service Manager (HTML) on any computer that can create a TCP/IP network connection to Microsoft NNTP Service. If Microsoft NNTP Service is connected to the Internet, then you can operate Microsoft NNTP Service over the Internet.

To start Internet Service Manager (HTML) on the same computer as the one running Microsoft NNTP Service:

To start Internet Service Manager (HTML) on a different computer from the one running Microsoft NNTP Service:

  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer or another web browser that supports ASP pages.
  2. In the Address box, enter:

    http://server_name/News/Admin/nnadv.asp

    where server_name is the DNS name or IP address of the Microsoft NNTP Service computer.

To access Microsoft NNTP Service properties:

  1. Choose Properties.
  2. Select the property sheet you want to access.

The following figure shows the NNTP Settings property sheet. Some property sheets in Internet Service Manager (HTML) are slightly different from those displayed by Internet Service Manager. The documentation points out significant differences.

Choose Services to return to the previous display.

To access expiration policy or virtual directory properties:

  1. Choose Properties, and then choose Expiration Policies or Directories.
  2. Select the expiration policy or virtual directory.
  3. Choose Edit Properties.
